Got an e-mail invite to something called "Main Street in Motion". Anyone ever went to one of these?

Get ready for a driving opportunity you won't find anywhere else! Join us at Main Street in Motion, a free and family-friendly event where you'll find more than 70 vehicles, including 25 competitive makes, in the same location. It's the perfect environment to compare Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Acura, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Lexus, Toyota and others side by side. Passenger cars and performance machines. Fun crossovers and full-size pickups. Hybrids and electric vehicles like the widely anticipated Chevrolet Volt. All together in the same place. At Main Street in Motion, see and drive vehicles in a no-pressure atmosphere. You can form your own opinions about our world-class models plus our top competitors.

Since we are soon going to buy the wife a new car this would be the ideal situation to look at what is available. But I'm concerned that this is one of those deals where they sent out eleventy billion invites and when you get there you have to stand in line for hours to get a test drive.

It's put on by GM IIRC.

It seems to be put on by GM. I actually just got an invite in the mail for the event. They were touting test drives for the Vette and Volt. I am thinking of going as being able to abuse nice cars that are not mine seems fun.

Ironically, one of these GM events is what convinced me to get a BMW. Drove a 3 series around a not quite autocross course and was hooked.

They can be fun. One tip: There's not much of a line for the tiny econoboxes, and they can be a lot of fun to beat on.

Unfortunately the wife is not interested in tiny econoboxes. She is looking to replace her 2000 Buick LeSabre and wants something similar in size. Wish I could convince her to get a smaller car but I think that is a lost cause.

I went to one here back in Feb. Its a decent event if you're just looking to get a feel of what various cars drive like.

You only get two runs total in either the Vette or Camaro. I'd highly recommend doing both in the Vette. As a former 4th Gen F-Body owner I don't have anything nice to say about the new Camaro.

Anyhow I'd go right as they're opening, or right before they close to avoid the crowds. When I went it was impossible to have any fun with all of the sheeple coming to a full stop at every turn on the driving course.

A friend and I went to one when the C6 Vette came out and it was fun. The day we went it was lightly raining so there were no lines for anything. They had the vette and a CTS-V there and we got the "only 2 runs in the fast cars" line until we got out of the V and the guy said "since there is no line feel free to come back as many times as you want". We did 6 or so runs each in the V through out the day. Good fun.

Hey just wanted to mention that I ended up going to this for a bit. It was a fun event. I mostly went for the performance driving. The line was long, bit it was worth it for my first drive of a c6 vette. Traction control must stay on and you need to not hit the cones. They give you some decent short straights for the performance cars, but otherwise a tight autocross course where you can't hit the cones. They will let you have some fun though. I also decided to try some compact cars as I will be in the market for a small sedan. There are short to no lines for anything except the vette, camaro, and the volt. The chevy sedan course was so tight I ended up being able to run the entire course in 1st gear using some of the manumatics. The new regal turbo was not bad. The cruze was alright. I actually came a way very impressed with the hyundai elantra. I didn't get to drive the volt. I was hoping to try the v6 mustang or the new mazda 3. No such luck. Overall, not a bad way to spend a few hours.
