So I let about 8 inches of snow sit on my Impala (1966) over the weekend and when I drove into work today I ran into a slight electrical issue. I was hoping you guys could help, it went something like this:
Turned on headlights. The "bright" light came on, as well as both indicator lights on the dash.
I turned on the left turn signal and it cycles correctly.
I hit the high-beam light floor switch and the "bright" light on my dash went off, but all four head lights are still on.
I pushed in the headlight switch to only have the "parking" lights on and all four headlights turn off, but the "bright" light on the dash turns back on.
No blown fuses.
No burned out light bulbs.
All other electrics seem to work fine...
There was a bit of snow build up in my cowling for the heater, but the carpets are dry to the touch.
I'm kind of at a loss with this one.
sounds like a faulty dimmer switch to me. parking light operation is red herring. the turn signals are not wired through the headlight switch, but the parking lights are. they use a two-filament bulb, the low filament is parking and the high filament is turn.
also (now i'm just showing off...) the rear turn signals are wired "downstream" of the brake switch, which is what allows the brake light on one side to stay lit while the other one blinks.
(slaps forehead)
I guess it was the illumination of the turn signal lights on the dash along with all four lights being on that threw me... I have a spare switch I can slave in when I get home.
Thanks
You drive a 66 in the winter?
In reply to Kenny_McCormic:
What's wrong with that? He apparently has a hovercraft too.
edit: Hungary Bill, you need to add pics of said '66 Impala to your readers rides page, like Now!
I drive her most every day
Update on the gripe: Got in the car after work and wouldn't you know? The danged lights were normal again. Guess she was just mad I made her sit out in the cold.
