Local car lot has a gorgeous Mazda 6, and its a manual. I'm not sure what year it is or what engine, it doesn't have a window sticker yet. I know that the V6 cars have the Duratec 3.0, but do the four poppers run the 2.3 mazda engine?
I've read a little on these cars, and I love the styling. I'm outgrowing my Sentra a little, and would maybe consider a decent deal on a 6. I wish it was a wagon, but I've never seen one except on here, heck I didn't even know they existed until I got on here.
Is there any way to tell from the outside of the car which engines/whatever this car has? I like to go to car lots at night to avoid over-pressured fat salesmen, who get all pissy when they realize I'm kicking tires.
Also, my friends Escape has the 3.0 in it, and that thing is a complete turd, I hate it. Any horror stories, what to watch out for, etc etc.
I think all the 5-speed models came with the 4 cylinder.
My cousin has a purple 5 speed 4 cylinder model, I kinda like it.
Now I know that 2.3 four popper is a great little engine, especially in Mazdaspeed trim. But the grille is different on this one, so I think its a post-facelift car which means its way out of my budget.
Wish in one hand!
1st gen MZ6 that has a STD. is the 2.3 4cyl. (not direct injected like the MS6 2.3) the 2nd gen has the 2.5 4 Cyl.
Other than that im not too sure.

Unless you get a wagon:

Check out some of the online forums... for example http://forum.mazda6club.com/
The 2.3 liter 4 cylinder (or 2.5 for 2010+) is the same as in comparable years Mazda 3s and Mazda 5s.
Early versions ('04 or '05) Mazda 6s had a V6 emblem either on the side or rear...later versions are unmarked.
In Canada, the Mazda 6 ('04 to '08) sedan and hatchback were available in both 4 and 6 cylinder with the 5 speed or automatic. The wagon was only available with the 6 cylinder, with either the 5 speed or automatic. I don't know about the '09 and newer....
The MazdaSpeeds (either 3 or 6) use the 4cyl turbocharged with a stick.
I don't know of any horror stories, but I have heard rumours the clutch in the 6cyl models are suspect...but I haven't experienced anything...(I have an '06 Wagon GT with stick).

You could get a V6 with the stick. I've driven one.
You can get the V6 with the 5-Speed, and both in the wagon. There is no "re-style", the different grill is part of the "Sport Package" which has a more aggressive front bumper, side skirts, a different rear bumper with dual exhaust, and a spoiler. 99% of Mazda6's are advertised has having the Sport package, and maybe 30% of them actually do.
Actual Sport Package
Fake Sport Package
The 3.0 V6 is related to the Taurus, Escape, etc but has been reworked by Mazda. It is actually a closer relative to the JaaagUar V6. Nice motor. Nice car, too. I'm shopping around for a V6/5-Speed Wagon w/ Sport Package and cloth seats.
Mazda 6 wagons are not cool - STAY AWAY!
This thread just intensifies my search to replace my Volvo wagon
I am 99.9% sure you could also get the manual transmission, and V6 in the rare hatchback body. My sister had a manual Mazda6i 4 cylinder hatch, and I was bugging her that she should have bought the V6,but she said she couldn't afford it at the time. I would love a V6 5 speed wagon, but they are super rare. I actually wish you could get the Mazdaspeed version in a wagon body.
Worked at a Mazda dealership during most of the first run of the 6, as long as you get the manual you should be happy with either motor, unless you need moar powa than the 4. IIRC the sport models had 1" larger wheels, 17s vs 16s, and the different grille. The entire time there I saw exactly ONE V6 wagon with the manual go through the dealership. There is a hatchback model as well that can be identified by the wiper on the rear glass.
Best driver's car amongst all the midsize sedans I drove while I was the lot attendant.
When we picked up the 5, they had a hatchback 6 on the lot. VERY cool. Seeing those wagons makes me wish there was a drool icon on this board. Don't know what it is, but Mazda is able to take basic car designs and make them look incredible. I've never liked 5-door cars, but IMO the 3 is one of the best looking cars of the past 10 years. Even the 5 manages to somehow not have the full pudgy minivan look.
I have an '03 sedan V6 5-speed sport with leather interior and the boomin' bose system. 135k miles and the original clutch is still going strong. gets 24 mpg in combined driving.

Called the Mazdaspeed 3.
Not really, Speed6 has AWD and the 6 wagon looks like it has actual room behind the back seats.
Thanks Dexter,
The Speed3,and Speed6 are not even close to being the same. The 3 is a hatchback, and the 6 wagon is well.... a wagon. I am not even sure I would need the AWD in a Speed6 wagon, but that engine in that larger body would be super cool I think. By the way I love the Speed3,and hatchbacks for that matter, but this thread is about the 6.

My wife had (until a wreck) an '04 Wagon with a V6/5spd; very fun car and the "perfect" size. Some magazines bitched that it was too small, but it was perfect. Once, when I had my truck and a buddy wanted to borrow my engine hoist, it was loaded into the back of the 6 wagon AND both of my kids could still ride in back with the 60/40 split rear seat.
BTW, the "sport" package was tacky, IMHO, and added no performance, but the grill was nice. If you ordered from the "collision" catalog, you could order just the grill for <$100. That was how my wife's was set up.
The "Sport" package is way more than a grill. Seriously, look at the links I posted above. It is an entirely different front fascia, headlights, grill, side skirts, rear bumper, spoiler, and dual exhaust plus the electroluminescent gauges and 17" wheels. The non-Sport looks ugly.

You absolutely can have a V6/5spd hatchback. One of my friends is driving one right now.
Just like the wagon, it is just a matter of finding one for sale.
My dream 6 would be a hatch with the Speed6 drivetrain in it. In black please, thanks.

I'll change that to 100%, I have a couple of friends with those.

Change that to wagon, and lets be friends!

You know what they say about opinions and all that, but I'm with Dav. The sport package is tacky on these. Make mine a non-sport wagon, v6 with 5-speed: cleaner lines, non "Altezza" taillights. Lighter, same power, klassier.

Nobody said it was just a grill... He just said he only liked the $100 grill.
I'm not sure which i like better. I wouldn't pay more for a Sport, that's for sure.
