Wearymicrobe's car looks like it's got 1935 Ford wire wheels on it, which are generally the hot setup for Ford wires.  That's what I've got on my 1932 pickup.  You can still find them used pretty easily.  Repops are available too.

A quick rundown of Ford wires goes like this:

  • 1928-29 Model A's used 21"
  • 1930-31 Model A's used 19"
  • 1932 used 18"
  • 1933-34 used 17"
  • 1935 used 16"
  • 1936-39 went to wide five disk wheels in 16"
  • 1940 returned to the smaller 5x5-1/2" bolt pattern on disk wheels in 16"
  • The wires were all 5x5-1/2" which is the same as many modern Ford trucks and vans, so a lot old Fords end up with pickup steelies from the 1960s-80s.
  • As the wire wheels shrunk in diameter, they slowly got wider, but I don't have the widths memorized.
  • Some wire wheels need a center support on the drum.  If they're not matched to the right drums, there are center support adapters available.

Adapting later juice brakes is pretty straightforward and there are kits do to it, just google a bit.  Vern Tardel has a good book about the conversion with used parts.  Kits with all new parts go for a lot more money.  You can go to disks etc., but you'll probably find at that point that you'll want to go to V8 front and rear axles and start doing more with your frame.
