Ok since we're in evaluating trades mode...

If you owned this...

Would you trade for this?

Some details before you jump in with "Hell Yes"

Top car is 1950 Studebaker Champion. Good driver quality restoration, runs and drives fine. Not a 100 point show car but a good driver. Everything works as advertised.

Bottom car is 1968 Porsche 912, the photo is from before it went into storage, 10 year ago. Now it looks much the same but covered in dust and with flat tires. Ran when parked...I wouldn't even try it now without going through it. Very clean underside, not rusty. Engine has a big bore kit and weber carbs.

The owner of the Porsche would be adding cash to the deal but the question is, how much cash to make the trade worthwhile?

Go.

912's aren't worth their weight in Yugo

I thought so too, but you wouldn't know it by their asking prices...I had a bit of sticker shock when I went to try and find comparables.

I'm at HELL YES!

A "long-hood" 912 will always be worth more than a four door Studebaker, and will be more fun to drive, as well.

For some strange reason, 912s are not worth that much less than similar-year 911s. Play with collectorcarpricetracker.com and you'll see what I mean.

I would do it and consider any money you receive toward the Studebaker a bonus.

912's have come way up in value in the past 5 years or so, simply because the 911's of the same vintage have skyrocketed in price. Production of 912's was minimal in comparison, making them much more rare, but because of the four cylinder, were never very desirable until recent years. Ive always liked the 912's, very cool cars, but give up stude to get one, no way, they arent THAT cool...

Your Stude is extremely cool, but I'd rather have the Porsche for how it drives. Porsche sounds like it could get expensive, though, if the engine required rebuilding or something.

With the right amount of cash, I'd do that swap.

YES. Do it now - they are rising in price.

That's my line of thinking, without it running currently I assume the worst and factor that in. I'd probably toss a bug motor in it temporarily so I could drive it and then I could freshen up the stock motor over time.

We'll see what the seller decides, its in his court right now.

I love the old front end of the 912. Any chance of getting PPI for the 912 without it running?

I'd probably do it, but then again I like early 911s and 912s. If you decide to go ahead with this, go over the body very carefully as they can rust something fierce and parts aren't exactly cheap.

In my situation, no. But that's only because with 3 kids a 911/912 is out.

Me, I'd keep the Studie. I have an averson to early 911/912's Having maintained my Boss's 911. Too many VW parts.

I have a 914, so I wouldn't swap. I would keep the Stude because every once in a while you need to wallow down the road on a cushion of air while little children laugh and point.

But that's just me ....

It's been years since Ive looked into 912s but if I remember right they're not the easiest car in the world to find parts for. To me it's always seemed like a poor replacement for a 911. My vote would be no.

I may be the wrong person to ask, since I never understood the appeal of Studebakers and I'm not a huge fan of the 912, (although they are supposed to handle much better than 911's of similar vintage), but that 912 looks to be really nice and they have been appreciating in value over the past few years. Just have a Porsche shop take a very close look at it to be sure.

If I owned a four door Studebaker and found someone who was willing to give me anything better than herpes for it, I'd make the trade in a heartbeat.

I'd keep the Stude personally. I'm all about odd looking cars, and the Porsche looks like.... a Porsche. They're great cars in their own right, but the Stude has more cache value, to me.
