I can't seem to give away my non-riced, perfectly running, well-mainted, 33-35 mpg 91 integra with new t-belt, water pump, brakes, $500 worth of new tires, lowering springs, KYB's, spare set of GSR wheels, and on and on and on.
I'm listening, go on
Topped off the trans and she ran great till parked. Went to let a friend borrow it a couple weeks ago and battery was dead, but it's new as of last year, so shouldn't be an issue.

Definitely interested to see how this pans out. We're looking to buy some land away from the city ('Burbs) and my commute could increase to up to 35 miles one way.
I've been planning to try to squeeze every bit of mpg out of the Scoob but it's not exactly hypermiler material.
My 95 Escort wagon 5 speed averaged about 36 mpg.
My 02 Accent 5 speed pretty much never dips below 38.5. I paid $1600 for the accent, which was probably a tad high.
I get 5.5L/100km in my 96 civic with 140k miles that I bought for $1200.
Thats an honest 42usmpg
If your budget is $1k, honestly I'd get the best car you can find, regardless of what it is. Try to find something that someone may have some documentation for or you at least get a very strong feeling the car has been well cared for. 98% of cars in that price range are projects/rust buckets/beaten to E36 M3/kid carz yo or all the above. They are few and far between, but decently cared for cars in that price range do exist. But be prepared to jump...real fast. There are lots of people scouring for those cars and they go fast.

That FX16 is a swap, right? Didn't the 4AGE only come in the GT-S model?
Nope. I had an FX-16 like this with the 4AGE in it as well. The FX-16 GT-S added a lot of other fun and attractive things, but the base FX-16 had the 4AGE too. The FX had the lowly 4AC.

No the 4AGE also came in some of the FX hatches (in fact I think they're the most common engine in the hatch body style).
And +1 for looking at that.

I hadn't realized it was still available - my nephew mentioned he has been looking for a Honda product in that price range. I think the no A/C in Atlanta may have been scaring everyone away.

All FX16's had the 4age. The FX's had the 4ac.

You will only get about 30mpg with it. They are geared low for performance.

30 mpg is still good. Especially to do double duty as a DD and auto x
Saturn, Escort, Neon all have stupid low resale value and can easily be found under $1K. All 3 can approach 40mpg highway with the right gearing. My SL2 has the most wrong gearing (automatic, DOHC) and still gets around 30mpg on the highway with 2 bikes on the roof.
I don't recommend these cars for much anymore, but for a DD appliance under $1000 they are great. Saturn and Escort are also the only 2 wagons you'll find on the road under 2500lbs made in the past 25 years.
Any small, early-'90s honduh or toyota. I commute 30 miles one way in a '93 toyolla wagon. I also encourage carpooling, if possible. Even sharing the commute with one other person (which is what I do) makes a drastic difference in expenses.
Anyone commute in an e36 318i? Wondering about their mileage might be an interesting commute/autox/hoonmobile
I got a 318ti with the M44 motor. No tune and running slightly smaller diamter 205/50 tires.
Around town doing short trips, I get 23-25 mpg. On the highway with A/C off I get 32 mpg and 30 mpg with A/C on. I cruise at 70+ too. I can travel 2 hours to autox, hoon all day, and travel 2 hours back and still manage 29 mpg with the A/C on.
Mrs. Zero has a 93 318is w/ M42 for DD duties. She confiscated it once she saw the mileage number I was getting on trips to visit family out of state.
She recorded similar numbers to MINIzguy.

Escort should fit the bill.

That might explain why my Saturn's mileage is closer to 25 with highs of low 30s. I do drive up a mountain on the way to work though (7% incline, known locally as the Conejo Grade) and my driving style isn't the most hypermiler friendly.

IIRC with the manual its really easy to swap the 5th gearset out for one from a SL1 box with the trans in the car. Unbolt the end cover and you're staring right at it.

Alas I also have a slushbox DOHC. It's leaving me soon and going to my mom for her super long commute, I'm sure she'll get better mileage than I do since she won't have that grade to contend with everyday. I'll have to make due with a MX6GT instead
