honestly, front end is not my concern,
it's some tween texting and running a red into the mid pillar.

Not according to this: http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shoppers/5-Star+Safety+Ratings/2011-Newer+Vehicles/Search-Results?startpage=0&pagesize=100&vclass=TRUCK&model=&year=&manufacturer=&searchtype=class&make1=&make2=&model1=&model2=&year1=&year2=&compcars=&byyear=&manufacturerSelect=&pagesize=100&channelLink=%2FVehicle%2BShoppers%2F5-Star%2BSafety%2BRatings%2F2011-Newer%2BVehicles%2FSearch-Results#
Basically every pickup has a 5-star side-impact rating.
It's all about energy dispersal. The energy that's lifting the rear end of the truck off the ground isn't going into the cab's occupants. Ergo, it's a good thing.
I've long complained about the oversize pitbull schnoz's on current trucks. It just (belatedly) occurred to me that other than looks,it's part of the crash engineering. More soft, compactable stuff up front is a good thing.

Hmm, interesting, i remember reading that my 2010 silverado had a 3 star rating for side impact.
just looked up my 2014. not so good for a passenger apparently.
I still find it amazing that they test for 35 mph and not 45...

Is that like how English bicycle manufacturers would proudly proclaim that their bicycles had steel frames and steel wheels?
Steel frames is OK but steel rims need to DIAF.
I am surprised Ford hasn't pointed out that cabs on the premium "big rigs" have been made out of aluminum for decades. Doesn't everyone want his pickup truck to be just like a big rig?
Kreb wrote: I would think that if Ford is welding those aluminum assemblies, they've got something a little better than a guy at the end with a mallet
I've spent a lot of time in OEM manufacturers' body shops in several parts of the world, including several BMW plants in Germany. The rubber mallet, the wooden pry bar, and the two man stretch are used often in everyone of these plants as far as I can tell. This isn't only an aluminum versus steel issue.
