No, seriously. The 60's produced soooo many good motors that it's unreal. Even the "uncommon" stuff like AMC's, big Buick, etc are still being used to make huge power today. Heck, I don't think I can even name a "bad" motor from the 60's...

can't count. It did look odd, but I've only seen a couple of those done up. So that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
The BMW M30 came out in 1968, started with 170HP from 2.8L, lived on until 1993.

I want to add the Fiat 124 engine in there. An engine ahead of it's time with DOHC, shims atop the tappets (instead of under them like many DOHC of the time) Aluminum head, A centrifugal oil filter, Belt Drive (one of the first production engines with it) and a lovely lovely sound. This is a 4 cylinder that went from 1.4 litres up to a 2.0 and powered everything from the lowely 124 TC (the sedan) up to world rally winning chassis in the Delta Integrale.
Truely an engine that needs to be more than a footnote in history
Roots Imp Engine. 875cc all alloy over head cam when most of the competition was cast iron push rods. Developed from a real racing engine and one guy could pick up a complete engine (well I could 20 years ago)
I would say that one was ahead of its time.....

Flat Six from the Porsche 911. That hit the market in the early 60's.
Lancia Fulvia V4 always sounds so so nice, and in such pretty cars, so that's my suggestion.

That's the BRM H16; two 1.5 liter V8's cobbled together to reach the 3 liter rules. It was never considered a "great" engine.
For a 4cyl choice - the Cosworth BDA
For a 6cyl - any one that came in a factory Porsche racer
For an 8cyl - Ford's HiPo 289; it was awesome in Mustangs, Cobras and GT40's
For a 12cyl - just about any sporting a prancing horse and/or red valve covers

Yes, it's one of the 10 factory experimental Porsche flat-16's for Can Am. Donohue liked the turbo Flat 12 better, so they went with that instead.
