You could actually buy an 05 new from the factory with the flat hood as an option. It was extremely rare though. If I'm remembering right, something like 24 cars were done that way. If you have a common color to both years it's really easy to find an 04 owner who wants to "upgrade".
My all-time favorite is Impulse Blue with the Blue interior, any year. I'd really like a Barbados Blue 04 for the "stealth" factor though.

What all was different between the '04's vs. the '05/'06?
04:
- 350hp
- 365 tq
- Flat hood
- single side dual exhaust (if I remember right it was a true dual setup
- small brakes
- 17" wheels
05/06:
- 400hp
- 400tq
- Hood scoops
- split dual exhaust
- 18" Wheels
- dbw TB
- bigger brakes
Almost all correct. The 04 exhaust was indeed true-dual, it just exited on the same side of the bumper. The big thing is that 18's were not standard on 05's, that didn't happen until 06.

I love the blue on blue also. I might pick up a used one some day. I looked at one new in that color combo in the showroom when we ordered my wife's Solstice GXP. I would have bought it right then, but she said it was too big, so we got the GXP vert, which we later trader for a gxp coupe.
Well, this seems appropriate for this thread. I've made my lowball bid already. http://www.sgi.sk.ca/lcgi/salvage_bid_site/comp_details.cgi?stock_num=S119009&store=Saskatoon

I guess most of the 05 models around here (or at least when I bought my 04) had 18s.
Strangely, I like the 17" better . . .
what kind of highway mpg do they get if you keep your foot out of it?

Agreed that the 17's look better, but they are such a holy terror to clean that I would toss them ASAP.
And for the highway MPG, 27-30 is common. 6th in these is an actual double-overdrive, and they actually have good aero.
I seem to recall an issue with getting replacement parts for these last time there was a thread about them.
It was a limited run and the brand is now dead.
I'd still like one to replace my 98' Z/28 though.
I have the LS1 GTO mainly because why would you pay extra for a hood with FAKE hoodscoops?? I drove both models and really couldnt feel any difference in the two. I average 19.5 mpg on surface streets using only 2nd, 4th and 6th gears unless I want to show off. Interstate mileage will be over 25 mpg if you can stay below 75mph.
The car is incredible, very reliable and extremely well built. I have met a lot of law enforcement driving this car. I am 54yo and not mature enough for it. I did swap out the stock rims with 18" aftermarket rims. Wheels are easy to find since it uses the same wheels as most large BMW's.
Actually the worst thing about the car is the limited trunk which got cut short when GM relocated the stock fuel tank. Find one and buy it; you wont regret it.

I need to stop reading this thread....it's making me want to go track down the guy I sold my GTO to....I wish I had kept it.
As for fuel mileage, it was surprisingly good. Even with the engine upgrades my car had, and the swapped out rear gears (I think it was 3.7x), I routinely got 24mpg in mixed suburban driving. Obviously, if I stuck my foot in it a lot, it got a good bit less. On highway cruises, it would easily get 30-32mpg.
Ha I got distracted and didn't realize what a great car these things are. The one for sale is similar to the blue one above. Did I mention they want $17K?
I might have to go drive it real quick. I was thinking boxster or 2000 Vette, but this is a whole different critter.
Of course that means I have to sell the green beasty, my supercharged miata.
Hate to break up the Aussie GM lovefest. For nearly the same price you can get a real runner. A 2005 Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 can be had for between 13,500 and up. Heavy duty brakes, a great suspension and an AMG Supercharged V-6. The aftermarket support isn't huge but is loyal. There are plenty of guys who are putting down 345-360 hp depending on dynos. The cars can be super low 12 to high 11 1/4 mile cars with less than 2,000 in mods.
A Crossfire? Are you berkeleying serious? That Mercedes inbred bastard piece of E36 M3? I'd take the bus over having one of those.
The only thing I absolutely despised about the GTO was the seat and steering wheel. They are never in agreement with each other and with myself. The seat was also very flat on the bottom cushion which doesn't agree with my back after 5 minutes.
A Crossfire? That was unexpected...
And is only available with an automatic transmission.
berkeleying PASS.
i've never heard anything good about the Crossfire.. dealer techs hate working on them, dealerships don't want to buy the special tools that are needed to work on them.
and they are FUGLY and utterly impractical for most people as a real car.

Clearly you havent driven one. Took mine to an HPDE event and was able to run pass a Charger SRT8, Evo IX, out drove a Cayman and older 911 where just a few of the highlights. The Crossfire community is very strong and has encountered and documented how to fix and correct most problems so maintenance cost have been greatly reduced.
The problem with the SRT-6 is Jeremy Clarkson and marketing that didn't even market the SRT6 to car guys. Additionally the notion that the car was a 45k plus Chrysler in 2005 wasn't so hot. Sure is the body is a Chrysler design, but the suspension is pure SRT and an engine that is surprising, factory 350 hp and 330 ft lbs of torque. Read the reviews of the AMG SLK32 for the same time period and writers have a such a hard on for the car. Throw the parts on a Chrysler and its a pile of dirt...
The base/limited Crossfires are a bit of a dog performance wise and suspension is soft but its a GT car.
Give one a test drive and you may be surprised especially considered the bang for buck performance now.
I'm not saying it's not a good car...
But a couple points:
1) Driver skill/comfort has a lot to do with things.
2) It doesn't have a man pedal. I haven't driven one, and i never will.
I don't consider it a piece of E36 M3 because it's got Chrysler parts on it. I don't even consider it a piece of E36 M3. Personally, i'm just 100% disinterested in it because it has an automatic transmission and i refuse to own anything with an automatic unless it's a truck.
I imagine that's where most of the push-back in this thread is coming from.

Parts are readily available from Oz, they built the things and didn't quit just because GM dropped Pontiac, even sold them in Great Britain as a Vauxhall Monaro
Air powered door locks. 'Nuff said for me.
You bastards!
I need to stay away from threads like this...
I now have visions of an LS swapped Fox Mustang hauling ass around the cones then getting close to 30 mpg on the way home.

You can do that with the "E36 M3 wrapper" F-body wrapped around that LS....
