It really doesn't look all that dangerous as it rolls along until it gets about 25ish feet away. The way it blew through that column was kind of shocking.

I'm assuming the paint on the inside catches fire, thanks in part to the high pressure making combustion easier, and from there it's a runaway effect.

I imagine the smoking in that video came from a wheel bearing letting go and letting the wheel and hub free as a set.
