I was skeptical of the real value and purpose of keyless entry and push button start too before my '15 Mazda6 but I love it now. As long as I'm in proximity to the car I can push a button on my door handle to open it and I can use the trunk release the same way. I also almost never take my keys out of my pocket. It is a legitimate convenience.

This right here.

My parents still have a 1996 Maxima GLE. They bought it in 1998 with very low miles, and it still hasn't hit 100k, but the tinworm has been busy. They have been shopping for something to replace it recently. My sister works at a used car dealer that has high-end cars, and her demo cars have all been late model Infinit G37's. The G37 is what the Maxima should be. Everything about them (aside from the RWD/AWD) just says Maxima to me. My parents will probably end up with one eventually.

When I rented that Maxima in Florida, my dad was with me. He said that it didn't feel like a Maxima at all. They aren't considering them at all.

Sad to hear about the death of the Maxima. My dad has had 2 from the 90s with manual transmissions, still has one from the late 90s. They are fun and useful cars. I think the G35/37 stole all the sportiness and left Nissan with the plain vanilla appliance that is now the Maxima.

On the subject of keyless fob/start buttons, I disagree wholeheartedly. I have one on my Corvette and it's one of my favorite features. I never take the keys out of my pocket, the car unlocks as I walk up and locks when I walk away. The car will not allow me to accidentally lock the keys in the car. I can leave it running to warm up and walk away and no one can drive it away. There is a hidden button above the license plate that lets me pop the rear hatch. When they're done right, the fob can be excellent. Oh and if the battery gets weak there's a slot in the glovebox to stick it and the car will still work with minimal fob battery power. The battery is supposed to last 2 years, that's plenty. The car only had one fob when I bought it and a brand new replacement from a dealer was only $67. I'm happy, can you tell?

Early days I thought the Datsun 810 (later called Maxima) was a damn good alternative to the BMW Bavaria of the same era. I loved that inline 6 & the car really drove well.

Oh Well!

A metal key takes up about 1/10th as much space in my pocket. It lasts... 50+ years? Replacing it is $1 at home depot.

Get off my lawn.

I disagree that the role of the Maxima has been filled by Infinity...The Maxima was the sports sedan alternative to getting a Camry or Accord. There was genuine value in that. Neither Infinity nor Nissan has any such car to fill that niche.
