It's time to do some more body work on the Dart we're going to try to paint with rustoleum sprayed out of an HVLP gun. A previous owner appears to have painted it with a dirty mop and caked on lots of yellow paint that is now flaking off. Is there any reason not to use rattle can primer on stuff that I've stripped down? Any specific brands to avoid or look for?

I would use Rustoleum primer to go with the Rustoleum enamel paint.

I think they have metal prep as well.

+1 more for Rustoleum products, they're my favorite and I've rattlecanned a LOT of crap. Bonus points for the ones with the big wide angle nozzle and trigger if you can find them- better spray pattern, although they usually leak a little.

Rustoleum has etching epoxy primer. It works well.

The last rattle can rustoleum paint I used took FOR EVER to dry. I switched to krylon for my last project and it dried much better, but gave more orange peel.

I second the trigger although its my index finger that is saved. I could never use my thumb. I also like rustoleum products.

Another fan of Rusoleum.

Get a can of the Rustoleum primer and HVLP that on first, but I've had good results without primer.

I did the wheels on my RAV4 in Rustoleum flat black with my $10 HF HVLP, no primer, just clean up the aluminum in the bead blast cabinet, bake until not smoking, shoot, let dry, bake again. Turned out great, and when I had to touch up a few places after the tires were put on, a disposable paint brush and a few dabs and you can't tell.
