Some car side window surrounds/frames are covered in what appears to be a black wrap, rather than paint or plastic. Sometimes rust seems to form under this material. What is the best way to repair the black wrap-type material after you remove the rust? For instance, if I grind off the rust, is there a way to re-wrap the frames? Here's a picture of what I'm looking to repair.
Supposedly it's some sort of vinyl tape (on 90s Thunderbirds at least)
I'd probably mask it off and paint it with a sturdy satin paint or rubberized coating.
Just buy some black 3m or other quality vinyl wrap and apply. Make sure the rust repair is smooth.

Looks like you might be able to find the vinyl precut to shape.

I have a Fiesta and some of that stuff is peeling up where the horizontal and vertical pieces meet
Carefully peel off, repair area and reapply new black tape. Or paint, your choice.
We painted the Mazda 3 we repaired there, looked fine when coated with a semi-gloss clear.
So yeah, vinyl or paint.
