Debating if I want to ditch the idea of building my  rallycross 2.3 Focus into a CRS Rally Perf Stock build and go rwd/rotary instead.

If I did, a cheap 12a model would sure be easy to find, but if I spend a little more time/$$ and find a semi clapped out gsl-se to build, I get the extra power/ torque of the 13b,fuel injection, rear discs and a lsd.

And it would run in the exact same class.

BUT,the rules say:

"Vehicle Eligibility

  1. All cars and trucks competing in the Performance Stock Class will be limited to a market value (for the basic car) of not more than $4,000

    1. If the value of the car is in question, it will be checked via the current WHOLESALE Blue Book with no additions or deductions for optional equipment or mileage (or general market value). The first year that the engine-body-induction system combination was offered for sale by the manufacturer will be used to determine the value of the vehicle."

Note that it's WHOLESALE value I need to get. Not retail or what they are actually selling for.

KBB values online only go back to 1992.

Online NADA guide shows these retails-so I THINK I'm ok(especially if we are going by average or low price-not high):

 Low Retail $2,675

Average Retail $4,225

High Retail $6,350

Found here:

https://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/1984/Mazda/RX7/2-Door-Coupe-GSL-SE/Values

I just want to verify.

Any ideas?

They've been creeping over $10k if one comes up for sale.  Definitely not something that NADA would deal with, since they are no longer used cars.

What the heck has a value under $4k anymore?

Regardless, your Focus should make a lot more power and have available parts. GSL-SE brake calipers are trim-specific and have been NLA for a long time now, which you will find will be a common refrain for all sorts of other maintenance items.

I'll bet the NADA trade-in value is a decent reflection of wholesale.

I seem to recall the Black Book put out by Hearst listed wholesale value as 80% of clean retail.

Yes,but I'm looking for wholesale, not what they are selling for.

And NADA actually does list the RETAIL values for for the car-that's what I posted above. Again I'm just trying to verify wholesale value.

I would imagine Tons of cars have max 4k wholesale BB value.

Here's my KBB online "trade in value",which I would guess to mean wholesale value, for my 2004 Focus ZX3 for instance:

"Trade in value $1813"

Other Typical cars you have running in the performance stock rally class are somewhat older Focus,Tacoma,Ranger, escort, neon, golf, swift, etc.

Yeah, you are right about that. Plus at 6'5" I actually fit in the Focus!! Suppose I should try one on(SA or FB) before I put too much effort into it.

I've been driving my son's 1988 FC while he is out of town and I fit ok in it,but of course no cage. I've heard first gen's can be a little more large guy friendly but haven't been in one in years.

Yeah, I am not so sure about that.  A GSL-SE?!   I have been watching the prices on them.  I haven't seen any clapped out ones (if they exist and have not been restored already), but maybe if really bad?  Maybe with a blown motor?

These are all pretty nice cars, and it is BAT, but I think it indicates the market for these is pretty high!

I'm about your height and I fit okay but only because I do not have a rollcage.  If I had a rollcage, I'd definitely need to do a floor drop, and move the seat as absolutely far to the center as possible.  Main helmet interference is not the roof but the upper doorsill (what would you call that?) hitting the top side of the helmet.

What is more interesting/depressing is that bolting a race seat to the floor actually nets less headroom than the stock seats on sliders.

Right..but again..don't care what they are actually selling for..what counts per CRS rulebook -to run Performance stock class is the bluebook WHOLESALE value of 4K or less.

They could be selling for a zillion dollars in the real world, but if bluebook wholesale is $3800 you can run it in perf stock. Otherwise Open class.

As far as actually buying one..yes I know they are getting pricey. Would make no sense to get a clean $10,000 one to tear apart for a rally build obviously, but every once in a while I see a beater.

Here's one not running in NorCal for probably still too much money, for instance. With craptastic night photos of it. Why do these dummies do that? To intentionally hide stuff? The Damn sun comes up every day you know? LOL

Yes Pete I've been researching a bit on floor drops(I'm guessing in a stock class that might be frowned upon though)but how does the race seat bolted to floor give you less?

NICE PIC BTW!

There is no book wholesale value on a 37 year old car.  It's a bit of a ridiculous question, really.  Who is going to trade an 84 RX7 in on a new Honda Odyssey?

Ridiculous?  Perhaps but it's right out of the latest(2020)CRS rulebook:

2.3 If the value of the car is in question, it will be checked via the current wholesale Blue Book with no additions or deductions for optional equipment or mileage (or general market value). The first year that the engine-body-induction system combination was offered for sale by the manufacturer will be used to determine the value of the vehicle."
