Turbocharged Slant Six!!! Use GM 3.8 Turbo EFI bits to be extra offensive!
That would be really easy, actually. It's a 3 tooth shutter wheel on the crank and a single spike at about 25ATDC for the cam position signal. Should be easily swappable/fabable. The ignition module processes the sensors and gives the computer a position signal, as per standard DIS GM practice.
The only problem is, you would have to find someone selling the bits.

Edit: a thought that just came to me is 2.4 turbo from a PT. Trans would be the sticking point I think, yoter trannys are pricey.
Easy. Jeep put the non-turbo version in the Wrangler for a few years, so there are longitudinal trannies that'll bolt right up if the FWD bellhousing is the same as the RWD one. If it's not, use the Jeep block and bolt up the PT turbo bits.
You can either get an NV1500 5 speed (03 - 04) or an NSG370 6 speed (05 - 06).
The FWD and RWD blocks are the same. Bellhousing is shared with 2.2/2.5, as well, I think. That was only ever longitudinal in the Dakota, but it uses what I think of as "generic Aisin bellhousing" so all sorts of Toyota transmissions should bolt up to it.

Far as I heard the 2.4 needs the bellhousing from a liberty to go rwd with options that can handle power. Probably the same one as in the Wrangler but it's likely cheaper to get the liberty.
I'm not 100% on the 2.4 having the same bellhousing as the 2.2/2.5 since I read that a dakota bell wont work with it.

Nobody has said 2jz yet? The internet is disappointed.
No cause mucho $$$$ and fun to find.
However, the 1 UZ is dirt cheap and if you can live with the auto, this can be done for poco dinero. AND it would piss off the Mus-tards to no end.
Low mile JDM NA 2JZ's can be found for <$1000 complete with automatic transmission attached. There's an importer in Houston selling engines only for $700 complete.
Manuals are pricey, but "NA/T" kits are stupid cheap on eBay.

Excellent!
"I'm sorry officials, I couldn't hear you commenting about how slow I was over the sound of all the delicious food I am cooking. Maybe you could try repeating yourself after you've had a bite to eat?"
Honestly, a 2J NA-T with an AR-5 from a Colorado and a bellhousing adapter would be great. Like the 2JZ Mustang from Tokyo Drift, but on a budget. Broke-yo drift?

I'll need to check again, but I seem to remember a factory bellhousing existing that makes that combo possible. I know several Aisin automatics, such as the AW4 used in Jeeps, already bolt up if you have an auto 2j bellhousing.
How bout enough beer to convince the Ga Tech crew to haul you around the auto X AND the drags wearing Captain Caveman capes? points for sub 1k budget and caveman build!

KA motor out of a Nissan Hardbody Pickup + snail of your choice?
2.3 four cylinder.
Not an Ecoboost or even a Duratec - pop in a twin plug Lima. Make the base model Mustang that Ford stopped making after 1993!
No?
In reply to Knurled:
Use a 2.5, bigger number for better marketing. Period correctness and such.

The 5-speed Aisin AR-5 in the 1G Colorados was in the same transmission family as Toyota's R154. All you need is a 2J R154 bellhousing, it will bolt right up to the AR-5 case. Then it's just a matter of clutch disc (96-01 Blazer will fit IIRC) and a pressure plate (7M-GTE 3rd gen Supra plate will work) and figuring out shifter + clutch pedal.

This was another thought, but out of a 240SX since they are pretty cheap from swap guys tossing them aside.
I guess my other thing is what to FMV the roller as. I bought the car as an engine donor for the FFR Daytona, so not sure how to even figure out FMV for selling it back to myself.
