Bad engined Boxsters are starting to get really cheap. Somebody needs to figure out how to mate a Subaru engine and starter to these transaxles.

Not mine, etc... http://newyork.craigslist.org/brx/cto/1778875787.html

I thought the Boxster S had a 2.7 litre?

Kennedy adaptors?

Nobody makes a workable adapter. The Subaru starter mounts on the transmission, the Porsche starter mounts on the engine

And, yes, the "S" did not cone with a bigger engine. Something's fishy with this car.

It looks like you can get a good used engine for around $3K or so, or an S engine for another $1500 on top of that.

What could be so horrible that can't be rebuilt?

Porsches are not rebuilt, they are reborn after being blessed by sweet baby Jesus... Don't ya know?

I don't know enough about Boxsters, other than I love them. Is there an inherent problem with the engines?

Yes, they are expensive.

I think I like the MR2 better.

seems that for the cost of the suby engine and the adaptor and all the heartache.. you can drop in a good Porsche engine that fits the first time and runs when you turn the key.

Early boxsters (except for their headlights) are tempting

why not and LS1 instead?

Flat-4 would probably fit easier than a LS1, although either would be awesome.

I've been hoping someone could make the LS1-boxster swap work, but the LS block is just a little too long and would require relocating the transaxle rearward and some very clever accessory setups. There's a thread covering this in LS1tech's conversion section: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1049878-boxster-ls1-swap-ideas-needed-plz.html

Also in LS1tech's conversion section is a thread where a guy is making good progress with a C4 996 LS1 swap. Early 996's are also getting very cheap. He did have to cut part of the rear frame/brace and will need to weld some reinforcement where he cut. But the swap looks reasonable for anyone with some fabrication skills because the early 996 wiring isn't too complicated. The later 996's is another story. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1240791-2001-porsche-996-ls1-conversion.html
