GRM Staffers did a review of each in the New Car Section, just curious if anyone else did homework on these or are they just too goofy.
My requirements are a stick and the ability to pull a motorcycle on a trailer totaling 1000 lbs.
Any comments, suggestions, interesting links?

My ex has a Soul (note to self -- insert cheap shot here). She has had it for over a year and loves it to death. I'm impressed with it, too. Not a sports car, but funky-fun in its own right. I cannot abide the look of the Cube, so to me the answer is a no-brainer.
My wife drives a Versa SL. Same mechanically as the Cube. She chose it because it had the best highway manners for a car in what I call the Scion-Class. Her need for the car was a lot of highway driving. Personally, a couple years into it, I really do not like it. Maybe it is because of theCVT automatic but the car is Soul-less (no pun intended.) She, likes it a lot. To me t is an appliance.
I am not a fan of the Cube styling most of the time but I did see one the other day in a funky green, sort of Olive Drab, that actually appealled to me. The Cube claims to have a lot of sapce but from what I can tell, it is weird space, mostly tall. I will say, on my wifes Versa, the back seat is huge. It really is the most comfortable seat in the whole car. The greatest asset in the car is the big square rear doors that allow me to put just about anything big into the back seat easily.

If I were looking for a new car, the base soul would be one I would check out. It has a smaller engine, but weighs a fair bit less than the other models. I personally like the looks of the cube better than the soul, but haven't looked too much into them.

I prefer the element. The awd and higher ride height might be better for you in snow country.
Not stayng in snow country. Wanna buy a V6 5spd 4-Runner?
Soul with the 2.0L. Same Beta engine that's been tried and true in the elantra/spectra chassis for many years.
I question either of them being able to tow a 1,000lbs of trailer.
Is it just me that thinks the designers of these two vehicles read a lot of Dr Seuss books as a child?

Wife and I test drove them back to back when she went shopping for a new car.
Soul was cheaper, better equipped, better warrantee and more fun to drive.
I really wanted to want the Cube more because...well...its wierd and I like wierd, but the Soul was the better deal without question.

I don't. I know multiple people that towed uhauls behind their Elantras (~1500 lbs) cross country. Those cars are still pulling well.
The plan is for one of these and a full size pick up. If the box is lacking there's always the truck.
I want to escape New York as soon as possible; spouse wants to take winters in different parts of the Country and find the perfect spot to settle. I don't have the patience for that, I'm tired of giving money to these princes that keep asking for more and can't pass a budget.
Sorry, that's another thread.
1000 lbs. can't be that much for a 2.0.

There's a lot more to towing than just engine size.
But, since you say a full sized truck is in the plans as well, it's a moot point.

Nearly anything can tow 1k. Hell, a Miata can tow that.
Googling around, only the Motor Trend site gives a towing spec; it says "0.0".

Element has a max rating of 1500lbs.... just throwing that out there.

Soul would be an easy choice for me.
Why not just find you a Pontiac Aztec and be done with it? I mean, that's about the only thing uglier than a Cube.
The Cube looks like it was designed in the 60's. Put some metal flake paint and some airbrushing on it and I'd drive one. I think the asymmetrical windows are a nice touch.
Towed my motorcycle on a small trailer behind my gen1 Xb several times. It has my vote too.
I really really like nissan. But the Soul looks like a better deal all around.
I couldn't bring myself to drive anything as ugly as those two "cars"
