I spent a few hours with Dale Sr. He’s an interesting guy but hated to talk about Stock car racing. I would too if every minute of every day you get know it alls with opinions.
The guy I’d like a conversation with is Jimmy Johnson.
You should look up the download with Terry Labonte as the guest. Midway through last year, I think.

When Junior was on Joe Rogans podcast I found it very interesting that he said Senior never once talked to him about how to drive a race car or how to drive certain tracks. He said he got on the radio once to give him some advice when he was struggling at a track but that was the only time and he was already in a cup car.
As to the whole Nascar sucks thing I'm just about the polar opposite as some of you. I was always a massive fan. I watched every single race from the time they started showing every race with "flag to flag coverage" up until they came out with the COT. It wasn't the COT that turned me off but that was just the time period that I started beginning less interested in it. But I also watched Indy cars and kart, IMSA, F1, monster trucks, swamp buggy racing, drag racing, stadium trucks, moto cross, super cross, rally, power boat racing and any other kind of racing you can think of. And I loved it all. And I still will sit down and watch almost any kind of racing that I can find, except for Nascar. I don't know what it's missing but I just cannot get into Nascar anymore.
My son and I have this discussion often, we'll just say he's not a fan and I'm not really one either.
I had my F1 snob phase 40 years ago. Their marketing does a really great job but it's the hype that gets me, I'm to much of a counter culture guys so I find a lot,of,it to be silly. Feel the same way about football, it's not my thing but the over hyping seals the deal that I'll never watch.
I do totally disagree with the restritor plate tracks, only because I think they are going to kill somebody some day. I think they are overconfident about how strong the cars are, they are indeed stout, I just feel they're to reliant on it.
I also don't want to spend 3-4 hours watching a race but really it probably comes down to I'm just not an oval track fan.
We used to go to Riverside and watch because my brother got comped tickets to the event. The guys raced super hard and we were always impressed at how hard they raced.
Now with all that said Harry Gant is one of my favorite race car drivers, we talked to him once post retirement and he was just a really gracious guy.

Harry Gant should give all of us hope that maybe, just maybe, we can still make it. Rookie of the year at 42, 18 wins by age 52?
That's awesome.

My dad came to hang out last weekend, so I watched some of qualifying and the race at Atlanta. The new aero package (no idea if they will use it at the BIG tracks) has really slowed the cars down. By around 15 mph per lap IIRC.

I was a huge doubter, but it actually worked pretty well, I thought. The cars were slower, but the racing was still pretty decent. It could be argued that it was better, because prior to this setup, it was really hard to run the outside on worn tires. That 1200 rpm they are not using has to save a buck or two as well.

I found the only way to enjoy Stock car racing is invest in a few drivers. Invest as in take an interest. Learn something about that driver and his team.
That way you can follow his progress or lack of progress throughout the race. You can follow him through the race through the season and even between the seasons. Just watching a bunch of cars going around and around Igor hours is about as boring as watching paint dry.
I like to pick three drivers and teams.
Someone who is really skilled and has the team to support his skills.
A dark horse who shows skill but doesn’t have the required equipment or team
Finally a barely make the field back of the firld guy doing it on his own dime. Independent with old equipment and volunteers
Support Kyle Larson! We've been watching him over the years as his success on dirt has taking him to the big leagues!
In reply to z31maniac :
Kyle is fun to watch. I also like Ryan Preece. I’ve been following him in the modifieds for a while and he’s really good.
Maybe because I started following racing by watching NASCAR but I generally followed drivers more than teams or manufacturers in most of the racing I watch.
