bought a winter beater Volvo that included "blacked out " taillights with spray on tint. Can this tint be removed by buffing them out with coumpound? any detail/bodyshop guy thoughts?

Probably doable the same way we do headlight restorations at our shop. Four stages of sanding (500 dry, 800 dry, 1000 wet and 3000 wet) followed by buffing and polishing. Takes off all the yellowed crap on plastic headlights, so it should (in theory) work for taillights too.

Yeah, so long as its sprayed on the outside only, alot of people, including myself, tint the inside, which is impossible to remove. Buffing will work but mith's above method will be faster, just be careful in the 500 and 800 grit stages or you could screw up your lights.

I start with 600wet very carefully, then to 1000wet, 2000wet, and 3000wet. I dont usually skip grits....but to each his own. Then buff like new.

I did some googling and apparently "VHT Nightshades" is lacquer based. My understanding of lacquer is it doesn't cure the same way enamels do and should be easier to remove.

buffed out with compound rather easy, thank god for squarish Volvo square taillights
