If that's all that failed in 371k miles that's atypical of any vehicle.
My Lexus gx470 from 115k-127k miles needed both front axles, radiator, alternator, shocks/struts, and had a leaky steering rack.

I will admit I tend to get much better life out of vehicles than most. Mainly because I don't cut corners on maintenance.
But with over 70,000 miles on my Ford pickup and zero failures it's beginning to look similar. I honestly expect the truck to last the rest of my life.

you assumed rightly. That was my Nissan Patrol ute. It had an I6 diesel with a snorkel and sounded glorious with the window open.

I'm getting 35% of the purchase price of the Land Cruiser back by depreciating it. I did the same thing with the Cayenne, it results in that amount of money back in my bank account.
The delta between those numbers, what I'm getting from the R and the depreciated number of the Land Cruiser is around $10-12k.
So I'm paying $10-12k to swap to the Land Cruiser. What am I missing that's dubious?
That's a nice looking truck. While you probably won't be fording any streams, the snorkel blends in with the dark paint and wouldn't bother me. The induction noise should at least be interesting. I really like my old, beatup FJ. It's surprisingly comfortable. The Land Cruiser will be very nice. Congrats.

That interior is gorgeous. I can't believe the previous owner cut up a truck that expensive to put a snorkel on it but ahh well. I'd overlook it for those front seats, too.
I get your financial reasoning and I think you'll clear some profit if you keep this thing nice and decide to sell in a few years. Or at least break even. These things don't depreciate and you're getting 35% off right in top. Easy choice.

How about educating me? I haven't read his books. For me it's simple math that I've successfully done in the past, but I'm curious what I'm missing here, I'm not an economist.
Let me be more specific with the money trail.
R trade in value $37,400
R tax credit against purchase price of land cruiser $3000
R selling aftermarket parts $5000
Total for R value $45,400
I pay estimated taxes every paycheck. With the total deduction of the purchase price of the land cruiser that'll create a tax refund of $29,000.
add that with the R value and it's $74,400. Which means I'll be paying less than $10,000 to get the land cruiser.
What I'm getting value wise for the R is every bit of what I have into it, not counting the fact that I depreciated it over the last three years too, so I'm actually getting more than I have into it. So that was a no harm, no foul financial purchase....

Yeah, I don't understand it either. It's an irreversible mod, you cut a 4 inch hole in the fender, plus other smaller holes in the fender and A pillar.
he told me he never took it off-road beyond a dirt road once or twice. So the skid plates etc are all for looks.
I agree, even if I sell this in 3 years I'll be selling it for more than I have into it after depreciation

It's a good deal espcaiclaly with owning your own business and it being a large suv.
my point would be you've got $75k tied up in a vehicle. There are bonds returning 7 and 10% now. If you were really financially interested in keeping the most value you'd drive a cheap beater and park the rest in those bonds. 3 years later you'd be up more than you'll make on this vehicle sale. You're betting on the vehicle not depreciating in value much. If gas prices spike. You're outta luck.
Just my thoughts.

Ok, I get your point. However your logic says that we should all be driving cheap beaters. Clearly that's something that the vast majority of us don't want to do. I don't want to do it for instance. I like driving something nice, it makes me happy. Something that makes me happy is worth the money to me. I'm also in the position that I won't *have* to sell the truck, no matter what gas prices are doing. I can easily ride out whatever little blip there is and just wait. Historically these do hold their value well, obviously not like the market is now, but I'm confident I won't be losing money on this. Despite what I'm paying it's still the cheapest one with 20k miles on it listed in the nation, by a long stretch. (I felt like I was writing a title to a YouTube video there)
Once I've depreciated it I'll be into it for more like low $50's and it'll be worth that for a really, really long time. There are many dubious financial decisions all of us make, from buying cars, houses, guns, getting married, etc. We're here once, if you can afford to do it and it makes you happy, you should do it.

Yeah, I really wanted one with this brown leather interior. It's so much nicer looking than the alternatives of black and tan. I'm not super stoked about the black metallic exterior color. I would've prefered the dark grey instead, black is so hard to keep clean. Looks great when it is tho.
Yes, the Cayenne's are over 6k GVW and I did do the same depreciation on it. I got 35% of that purchase price back in a tax refund the next Spring...

Nice, I didn't realize the Porsche met the criteria (but I never looked). The last 4 business vehicles were Lexus LX for the same reason you did the LC. It's a nice benefit.

Well, I signed all the papers for it yesterday morning. Found a bought a set of the TRD "Rock Warrior" wheels, they're on the way too. Also bought some phone mount stuff and I need to buy some lug nuts so I can throw away the inevitable "locking" lug nuts I'll find on it, along with a cabin air filter, oil filters and the 5 passenger cargo mat.
I found a set of Thule square roof rack bars that'll work and bought the proper feet/attachments for the 200 brand new off Craigslist for a good price. Then I'll move the ski attachment over from the Golf R rack and that'll be good to go.
This Saturday is the "Stockify the R" party in my garage, should have everything off of it this weekend. My friend, who lives fairly locally to me, has the exact same R as me and is buying most of the parts from me. I'll have a few smaller bits to sell and the summer wheels/tires too.
FYI Rock Warrior wheels need special lug nuts. They are spline drive but have a fat end on them with a spinny washer. Terrible description I know but look it up on IH8Mud.

The guy I bought the wheels from has them, I just figured I didn't need them and I detest "locking" lug nuts. I just sent him a text asking him to send them to me. Hopefully he still has them...
