Why do women not like El Caminos? The only car SWMBO has put her foot down on is an El Camino.

Because most of them have not seen a 1978 Ranchero!

One day I am going to turn up with a '72 Ranchero and say you didn't say no Rancheros....
as a guy that effectively traded a daily driven, low milage, needed nothing but gas truck for a 64 el camino, I cannot support this decision.
needs to be a 64-72. black on black. vynil roof. aero wheels. ls. etc.
with the 80's elkys, you REALLY need to inspect for window rot, and floorpan rot.
also, the engine is suspect, seeming how its hosed with Chinese chrome, converted to different accessories, etc. has Camaro z28 wheels from a 3rd gen on it. theyre 15x6.5 if I remember right.
has the ss style nose on it, which is a HUGE plus. recently primered badly, with tons of overspray. which concerns me.
id have to see the civic....
Oh, and if my wife saw this ad, i'd probably be on a plane. She LOVES El Caminos. And other weird E36 M3. I almost flew to Maryland when Jthw8 posted that clone of his Colony Park not too long back.
I would be all over the El Camino, dependent of course on a check for crippling rust.
As mentioned, all sorts of GM parts swap, so junkyard swapping could get you posi, big front discs, Blazer rear discs, etc., etc. Quick steering boxes come from 3rd gen IROC's and TA's or even certain Jeeps.
Making it 5x5 would be no problem using B-body spindles/brakes and axles, assuming it has a standard 8.5 c-clip rear end. I guess in that case you would want the B-body rear discs and not Blazer.
78-87 El Caminos have the 7.5" axle, not the 8.5. B-body spindles aren't a direct fit, they are taller than the Elkys spindles and require a shorter circle track upper a-arm, and different tie rods, maybe ball joints too, can't remember offhand.
Of course the GRM answer is to get these rotors from Speedway http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-1979-Up-GM-Metric-Brake-Rotor,3244.html which are G-body rotors but with 5x5 bolt pattern. You could just have the rear axles and drums redrilled to 5x5.
she'll be mad for awhile. probably get upset the next time you do this too. by about the 5th or 6th time she won't even notice. life is a breeze after that.
seems I remember a saying .... it's easier to get forgiveness than to get permission ... or something like that
so it seems your mistake was mentioning it in the first place
The Civic isn't your DD, right? If it isn't I say go for it. Not that I totally think you SHOULDN'T even if it is your DD, but I'd be a bit more cautious. Definitely check for floor pan rust- looks like it doesn't suffer from the common rust behind the the doors issue that the one I'm working on has. Doesn't have the chrome trim around the wheel wells either which I've been told is really good since water tended to accumulate there and rust out the wheel wells.
This is making me itch to get back to work on my Elky... hopefully I'll be able to start working on it again tomorrow morning...
Dooo It!!
I've been driving by one for sale on my way home for the past few weeks and I also have a sick fascination with these.
Do not do the Caddy tails though. That fad died out with Minitrucks in the '90's. I support the rest of the plan though.
One thing that just came to mind- you can't technically powder coat the grill- at least on the '86 front end the grill is just plastic and not metal. Have been seriously considering blasting the less than perfect chrome off mine though and using some black chrome-like paint on it instead though. Also, you'd need a MASSIVE overnto powder coat the bumpers themselves, though they are at least actually metal.

my wife didnt divorce me for mine.
but she did equate them to mullets.
at least she agreed to drive it when it gets the automatic in it, though grudgeninglly and only as a last resort.
on the other hand, i get more attention from both women and other drivers when im tooling in the elky.
my wife has banned a mullet. i think im going to grow one, start smoking pall malls, put hank sr on the cd player, and try to pick her up from work one day in it. just to see how bad she hurts me.
/hijack.
so, is the civic your daily? if it is, DONT TRADE. if not, proceed and make build thread.
also look into ub machine upper control arms for the tall ball joint c10 swap. dramatic difference is handling.

Mine was the same way until she saw the episode of US Top Gear where they turned one into a taxi. Now I think she might tolerate one if I did something a little crazy with it.

You have more details on this swap?
Dusterbd13 wrote: also look into ub machine upper control arms for the tall ball joint c10 swap. dramatic difference is handling.
I have about 6 pairs of Howe Circle Track upper control arms with adjustable Caster slugs and threaded upper ball joints.
Trade isn't equal. ElCo needs a lot more work to be "awesome" than the Civic. Biggest issue with the Civic looks to be paint, biggest issue with the ElCo looks to be everything.
This guy is also interested in trading for the Civic. I've had an E36 before and wouldn't mind having another one. I'd 86 the rear eBay tail lights. It just doesn't get me that excited like "The Camino" does...

Cool, thanks! Not sure if it will be in the budget to do that for the Elky since it's a Challenge car, but will definitely be looking into it.
