Mazda went through a spell where structural rust was an issue. Coworker essentially had his Mazda3 rear-clipped with new metal by Mazda to address this. It was a 2006.

I did not actually believe it until I went out to look. Must have cost them a fortune. Also one of the reasons I did not buy the Mazda3 even though I like the car.

My mum was looking at Protege5s when they were still selling new (2004~5 I think?) She was looking for a second hand one that was 1-2 years old but ALL of them had started rusting already at that age! She passed and bought a 2.5RS instead. Granted this was in Ontario (the Road Salt Capital of the Universe) but that's still no excuse.
