Said someone who had NO idea how much we "off roaders" do help and protect the environment. We don't complain about all the bikers and hikers that throw garbage on  the trail, we just toss it in the garbage bag we bring expressly for that purpose.

That's only the day-to-day stuff  there's lots of people out there fighting to keep public land open.....for ALL users.

Thumbs up!

I don't think I was clear on what I meant.....    If you have the people who buy Jeeps for the purpose of Mall Crawling deciding they need to go offroading all the sudden..   There won't be more anymore off road.      That is my point.    Let them drive their jeeps to the mall.  If all the sudden they think they need real 'cred' you are going to have a lot more trash to pick up.  Then you will have a hard time convincing anyone it is a great idea.

I know..  I am out there picking trash up myself.   You have to get them to be conservationists before they leave the pavement.

To an extent you're right. But that is where the 'veteran' or 'true' off roaders come in. when I got my first Jeep (15 Jeeps ago) I had no clue as to any of this stuff. I saw a nice Renegade (remember the ugly-but-vool YJ Renegades with the HUGE fenders?) come through the oil change place I worked at. I asked him if he knew of any trails. He told me he was part of a club and I should come to meetings and runs with them. I did. They educated me on the right way to do things.

I say this because you are right. As these $30-$50K Jeeps become $15K Jeeps, young guys like I was are going to get ahold of them and not know what resposible wheeling is all about. It's not terribly different then the kids with Mustangs and Camaros. They naturally want to rup up and down main street. They need to be directed to the track or strip.

I agree with all of the above but I’d submit that I was NEVER taught how to responsibly drive off-road, not litter, pick up trash and not ruin private property or unnecessarily damage the environment by other off-roaders, my parents taught me most of that.

But im not arguing with what you wrote.

Which brings up another question, why do so many jeep owners remove the spare from the rear door and just leave the black plastic square the mount bolts to?

They get stolen a lot.

More mall crawler suvs please. The more of them there are the less 4wd trucks there are on cl cluttering up my rwd searches.

It doesn't sound like your arguing. I think we're kinda saying the same thing really.

There's an ORV park opening up about 10 miles from my house, another is about 40 minutes north. We need more dedicated places to 'wheel. I think (hope?) that's where a lot if new 4X4 owners will spend their time. Then they can run into others that can show them the ropes.

Definitely not arguing,  and the point about teaching people how to enjoy being outside on the trail means getting them outside on the trail is well taken.   The more people enjoy and respect the great outdoors the better of we will all be...

Just keep the mall crawlers at the mall..   They will build a Walmart out there..

Interesting that nobody on this site seems to have considered the possibility of having one set of wheels/tires more suited to on-road driving, and another for when they want to hit the trails...Much like people here do for tracking their street cars.  I'm not saying this is necessarily the norm, but it is one more reason not to jump to conclusions about people we have never even interacted with..

This.  I've got 3 sets of wheels / tires for my Jeep (not a Wrangler).  A set with some sticky-ish rubber for summer street use, a set of snow tires and then a set of mudders for when it sees dirt.
