Starting to create my budget for the maint./upgrades for my autocross AE86. It needs new tires after last season. Car weighs in the low 2000lb range and I plan on running a 245/40/15 on a 10.5" wheel.

The two choices I have come down to are:

Hoosier A7 scrubs

or

BFG Rival S 1.5

I finished last season on well worn Nitto Nt01s that were stretched (225 on 10.5) and I liked how they drove. I didnt like the hoosiers I started the season on as they seemed very picky and didnt last at all. What does the hive mind say?

If the Hoosiers were cycled out they may have been unforgiving but generally Rcomps are really good at making regular drivers look like superheroes.  10.5" wheels are pretty wide, if you want to run 245 tires I don't see a need for more than 9" width.

In reply to KyAllroad (Jeremy) :

Ive got 9s for it but those are the street wheels. I had scrub hoosiers and they never got heat. Granted they were 275s so that may be part of it.

10.5" will be faster than 9" on a 245.

Are you required to run DOT tires?

What’s the maximum overall diameter?

My Miata ran R7s at the Challenge and they got plenty warm on a 37 second course. They were only 205s, so width may be a factor in why yours didn't heat up enough..

Let's try this again.  A7s will be faster than Rivals everything else being equal.  The advantage to the street tire is that you can drive to the event and race without changing wheels at the venue.

The car will be in XP, not sure what the tire requirements are on that.

How many runs can one usually get out of a set of scrub A7? I don't mind changing wheels at events if it means faster times.

Do you want to win your class?  Is your competition on Hoosiers?  If so, you need Hoosiers too.

How long they last depends on the car, the abrasiveness of your sites, and your willingness to spend money to avoid losing time.  Somewhere between 20 and 100 runs.

(edit) I think XP allows non-DOT slicks.  If so, then Avons might be faster than Hoosiers.

My competition willbe a supercharged e92 M3. He ran hoosiers last season but I was able to match and beat him a couple of times on the nittos.

Edit: what tire likes more slip to be fast? I got used to the way the nt01s drove and they liked quite abit of slip angle.
