Does anybody know what a '71 Karmann Ghia weigh? I am planning to tow a '71 Karmann Ghia with a 2001 Nissan Frontier V-6 using a tow dolly/trailer rented from U-Haul. Is this doable and safe? Thanks all.

~1750 lbs.. I would tow it on a trailer, not a dolly, (being rear engined and all... it would make difficult to tow in a straight line and would probably damage something)

You should be fine with a tow dolly, assuming it's a standard shift. The auto-stick was pretty rare in the Ghia. I've towed plenty of ACVWs with a dolly and never had a problem.

Ask if they have a VW tow bar. These used to be really common at rental places. It flat tows the car, is much easier to hook up (2 minutes tops) and will rent cheaper. It hooks around the front torsion bars with two pins.

Under 1800 is about right. You could always tie off the steering and tow it backwards on the dolly. Make sure it is tied of VERY well of course.

Put the rear wheels on the dolly. Secure the steering wheel.

Have you gone to U-hauls website ?
When you make a reservation the website will require that you put in the makes and models on both sides of the trailer hitch. If Uhaul does not like the vehicle combination it will not quote you a price.

I expect that your combination will be acceptable.

I don't use the website. I just run down to one of the thousand rental places in the area and pick one up. They never ask what I'm towing and/or what with.

Anytime I'm renting a tow dolly (it's been a while)...I'm always towing a cavalier. And typically with a one ton powerstroke ford van. Though I don't own or have access to either

I recommend caution with the rental fudging.
When you wreck you truck and your tow car, your insurance company (whos main goal is to pay as little as possible - if not at all) will hold this against you if they figure it out.
Falsified Rental Agreement
I am sure you personal insurance policy reads that the company will not insure you in the event or in the action of an illegal activity.

Net result, fix you own truck, fix your own car, fix the Uhaul dolly/trailer all from your own pocket.

My dad and I haved towed many Karmann Ghias and Beetles around with a vw tow bar. The only problem is if the car has a narrowed beam the tow bar won't fit on it.

You used to be able to buy these for about $35.

I can't find a photo of the one that I rented, but it was even simpler than this:
