How fast can you go for less than $2000? That's the whole idea behind our annual Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge presented by Tire Rack and powered by AutoBidMaster.
Whether teams built a car for less than $2000, entered their over-budget build, or both: They all battled against each other across autocross, drag racing and concours sessions at Gainesville Raceway to see if money …
Looking at the results I don't know what any of it means. I have no clue what significance the class acronyms have.
In reply to Crackers (Forum Supporter) :
Ignore GT, they all have it
N - narrow tires, 0-225 width, I believe.
W - Wide tires, 235-275ish (I always forget where U ends)
U - Unlimited, 285 and up (if I remember the limits for W correctly)
$ - within the monetary limits set by the $2000 Challenge rules, typically just called "under budget"
In reply to Mr_Asa :
I think "W" is any tire over 225 and still a 200TW. The "U" tire class is any tire, regardless of width, that is less than 200TW.

Yes, you can view the results here.
Maybe it's an article idea or maybe it's just a board posting idea, but...
I believe this was Randy's first exposure to The Challenge. I wonder if what he thought it was going to be differed from what it actually was for him.
Said another way, how did his highly seasoned eyes, yet virgin to the event, see the event?

I'm interested, too. He was a giddy schoolgirl every time I spoke with him. He is a wonderful person and genuinely interested in everyone's passion.
In reply to John Welsh :
There was a bit of a question and answer with him before awards. He seemed to really enjoy it, said multiple variations of "you guys are my people," and someone floated the idea of him getting involved in the parking lot build next year to which he gave a very enthusiastic yes.
this is welcome to hear about Randy because I kinda wrote him off as an arrogant shiny happy person after the first paragraph of his first column in the magazine. 100% on me for judging someone via words on paper and not by meeting them
In reply to SV reX :
well, in the pic with everyone in front of the cars it's missing at least a headlight

It did. Was running solo in the left lane, got out of sorts about 150-200 ft in and had enough momentum to tap the right wall after heavy braking/sliding. Bent the right front suspension, knocked out the headlight, and crunched a bit of the bodywork. The got a quickjack under the wheel and it drove backwards back up the track.
When we left they were in the pavilion with the car jacked up and already swapping out parts. They brought an entire donor car as a spare.

Yep. 10-20mph collision, at most.
Since I can relate to the drag racing times the best (easiest to think of as a mental comparison for me), there are some very respectable times in the list! I have driven an 11 second car before and for me, anything in the 11s is really fast to me, especially when the vehicle traveling at that speed is basically garbage (or shall we say, "Less than $2000 worth of car")?. Hats off to everyone who partook of the event; wish I could have been there.
Not a complaint; just an observation: that car would not have been legal when the event started oh-so-many years ago. I believe we had to stick with an actual car body (no tube frame) back then. Things have come a long way, but that certainly offers more latitude and creativity.
The way this car is described, it wouldn't be legal to go down the track without an sfi chassis sticker. If it had some beetle bits left, there's some grey area possible. Definitely interested in the rule interpretation here.
