This is very early stage planning by the way. Only really know at this point that I would like to Turbo charge a challenge car.

I was looking around on Ebay and it looks like you can get turbo kits for around $600.

Is it better to buy the ebay kit that has most everything you need, knowing that it's not going to be the greatest quality, or to buy junk yard parts and put a kit together that way.

junkyard parts + cheap rebuild kit

welder + exhaust pipes = turbo kit piping. home depot couplers.

i've heard "i have 20k trouble free miles on my ebay turbos" and "my ebay turbo didn't last past break in and shot parts into my engine"

Where is a good place to buy a rebuild kit?

Best thing to do for a rebuild kit is to send it to Magestic Turbo in Waco, along with about three bills. I'm kinda leary about ebay for stuff like turbos. There's some real junk on there, from what I have heard. Like plastic turbos, etc. With a junk yard turbo, you can stick your fingers in there and feel for end play before you put your money down.

if your engine is big enough to support it get a Holset if you can find one, they're cheap, tough as nails, rebuild VERY cheaply. If you're so inclined and have the time you might look into running a VGT Holset, they go on eBay right now for about $100-150 lightly used because no one 'knows' how to rig the variable geometry slider which can be done with a simple wastegate actuator to open the turbine hosing as boost climbs, a fellow, 'Aero' has done this we have a discussion going with him on TurboFord and numerous other DSM/tuner forums as well as his own website, www.turbotalk.org. There would def be challenges to overcome including the weight of the sucker (50lbs) on an exhaust manifold, as well as the right exhaust housing size (you can lock the size if you wanted, or say add an electric switch and an actuator to 'resize the turbo' on the fly :)

And I second everything Patgizz suggests...

I've hard of truck rad hose couplers but what are these home depot couplers made of? Rubber or silicone?

Fernco couplings. http://www.fernco.com/plumbing/flexible-couplings Available at better plumbing supply stores everywhere. I think htey are more like silicone than rubber. I used one on the MR2 here: I added the cage part because it was supporting the AFM as well.

You can find good deals on good products on eBay, but beware the cheap chinese knock-off turbos like the Evo3GT (16g copy). If you're interested I have a genuine used MHI Tdo5h-16G (the "Big" version) for $50 that needs at the minimum new seals -- blows oil when boosted at 23psi ;)

I pulled out that issue last night and read back through.

Lot of good information. Now I just need to find a car to turbo charge and hunt through the junk yard.

I'd buy a junkyard unit and have it rebuilt. Looks like the site above may already have rebuilt units in stock.
