I once again have access to one of these. While I can imagine all sorts of cool uses for it in an automotive sense, the first thing I'd like to do is dump my watch in it. Is that safe, or is that asking for water to get inside the case?

It's a 100 meter Fossil that has been in water plenty of times with no problem, but I didn't know if the ultrasonic allowed water to creep past seals.

It depends on a great many things. The strength of the ultrasonic cleaner makes a big difference.

I have one that I use to clean my glasses and I have access to a much more powerful one. The powerful one successfully made the screws undo themselves from my frames in seconds (they were not loose before going in)

So I would be careful on that front.

I don't know about your watch but my dentist got a new ultrasonic machine for the hygienist and at last weeks cleaning that thing HURT!!!!

Badly.

Hopefully your Fossil is in better shape than my teeth.

I picked up the big one at HF the other day to clean clock movements.(seeThis Post ) The first thing I dumped in it was my watch. I used windex as the solution. Five minutes later it was the cleanest it's been since I took it out of the box.

Make sure your watch is water proof.

As a certifiable er.. certified watch maker I say go for it for a short time. IF the crystal isnt chipped, the crown is in good shape and you havent had the battery replaced at the mall or Wally world.

Also make sure the case hasnt corroded on the back near the case back. Fossil uses some questionable "Stainless steel" that corrodes badly some times.

You could just dip the bracelet only in there with out submerging the case head.

Ditto that - our ultrasonic jewelry cleaner has a bracket to hold a watch just above the cleaning solution so that the bracelet hangs down for cleaning. Most of my watches aren't dive-rated, so I make sure to keep the cases away from liquids.
