Site cred is a terrible thing to waste.
And for no good reason..
novaderrik wrote: my own personal theory of why kids these days are such crappy drivers is because they don't ever get to really watch how mom and dad drive the car- they are strapped into the back seats with portable video games and dvd movies to isolate them from the driving experience. i got to ride right up front and watch how dad worked the pedals and steering wheel. and even when i was in the back seat, i had nothing better to look at then whatever was going by outside the car.
That is a pretty good point. When I was a kid i rode up front if my mother was driving. She has yet to have her first accident or ticket inspite of driing quite a bit. I also went to work riding in trucks with my father who has had one at fault accident in 40+ years and my grandfather who retired with no at fault accidents. As I got close to getting a license I drove them around alot and got a great deal of criticism. I'm going on 19 years, 17 in a truck or bus and have at one at fault accident.
I had my first at fault accident when I was 16, just after getting my license. In the 40 years since, I've had none.
It's true that in earlier times we spent more time watching our mothers/fathers/grandparents drive, because there wasn't that much more to do than count the fence posts as we drove by, and pray for a series of Burma Shave signs to entertain us.
Cars have become so insulated now that the experience of the road is nearly lost. The homoginized interstates have replaced the 2 lane country road, and kids today don't know what a cotton field looks like, or how to tell a heron from a hernshaw, or a hawk from a handsaw.
I consider it a damn shame, but that's "progress"
Sorry about the rant, but I just feel like an old fart this morning..
Things were a little different growing up in the city, but I did still learn what heroin looks like. Didn't know it was big out in the country. Can't help you on the hernshaw though.

"P.S. What makes NASCAR more legitimate than the number of teams involved in other motorsports, but how many new NASCAR drivers have come over from other series. "
I'm not sure I understand the question.

A heron is a big bird, a hernshaw is a baby heron. The handsaw thing is just a mispronounced version of it. Gawd, I love the English language.. it's so .. fluid.
As far as the drivers from other series is concerned, I think it's just about the money. Why else would Montoya go from being a F1 champ to driving a 4 speed stick?

And WHY is it all about the money?
Advertising space, series marketing, carnage, drama, international television rights, manufacturer recognition it's all folded in there to make racing a show, and people pay for the show. THERE IS BETTER RACING AT AN AUTOCROSS but until you can figure out how to get paid six figures a week for 37 weeks autocrossing I think we should let the professionals "show" us how it's done. We will keep spending our weekends RACING.
Well, when Juan Pablo was on his game in F1, I suspect he was doing six figures a week easy.. .. but the poor sucker is from Columbia, and can't live there for fear of being mobbed by fans. Let's see how long it takes him to do that here.
Schumi could walk the streets of Atlanta, and nobody would even know who he was. There's another reason some of these guys come over here, and it has to do with privacy/quality of life.
Now if you're Darrell Walthrip.......

Ever seen a baby pigeon? You're excused. It's a trick question.
Pigeons are fairly good birds.. if you cook them correctly.
Otherwise, they're just rats with wings; dinosaur rodents.
Me? I'd rather have bacon.

I don't dislike NASCAR, I dislike rabid fandom. (That's true for almost anything.....music, sports, movies, etc.) The whole 'cult of personality' thing detracts from enjoying the cars and what the drivers are doing.

Pigs supply Bacon then Pigeons must supply Baceon!

Funny part about that... the reason there are pigeons here in North America is because they were a delicacy, I believe in Egypt, and were imported.

My grandfather raised pigeons. He would race the faster birds and eat the others. Never found out how many pigeons he beat.

Too many people with high post counts to stop arguing now.
I think someone needs to bring in PETA since we are talking fowl.
They never list it as pigeon on the menu, try squab
Broiled Squab No Ingredient Listing
Remove feathers and pin feathers. Cut along the backbone with a small, sharp knife, being careful not to cut the entrails. Remove contents of body without breaking lungs, kidneys, crop, and windpipe. Wet cloth in warm water to which a little baking soda has been added (1/2 teaspoon to 1 quart), wipe inside and outside, and then wipe dry. Season with salt and pepper. Flatten breastbone and place bird on broiler with skin side near flame. Baste with butter. Turn and broil 12 to 15 minutes until done.

Thank you for the best laugh I've had all week. Yeah, your little stroll around the cones is "real racing" and the pros in one of racing's most difficult and competitive series are wankers compared to you-hahhahahahhhaaaha. Thanks again. I guess all the pros from other disciplines that have tried Nascar and failed miserably and those that have proclaimed it some of the most difficult, yet satisfying racing don't know jack either, right? Priceless.
Oh, and just to be clear-I'm no fan of the current Nascar series, but to claim it isn't real racing is stupendously ignorant.
Moparman wrote: In reply to ignorant: I agree, but if they got into autocross they would learn more skills useful in the real world.
That isn't the point.
The point is getting kids off the couch and under the hood.

Hmm, the speed to distance in autocross is similar to F1. Many road racers credit autocross for their skills, especially on tight courses. Autocross is one of the more challenging tests of driver skill. Don't believe it, ask some real pros.
Arguably, it teaches car control better than any other activity (professional driver instruction excepted, but that usually involves autocross-like activities). Yes, we think our little runs through a parking lot are challenging and require more skill than many other amateur motorsport events. Try it sometime.
I used to think that this was a very autocross-friendly board, but now I see it is largely populated by low-buck engine swappers who think their street escapades are indications of talent and who believe that real men have limited incomes.

Autocross can do both.
In reply to forzav12:
NASCAR is like the "Backyard Baseball" game my kids used to play. It was as real a computer baseball game as existed, but it had comical gimmicks to make children happy and interested. That is what NASCAR is. It as real as any other racing series with gimmicks added to keep the average person interested. There is nothing wrong with it just as there is nothing wrong with checkers, but chess is the real deal.

Why do you think anyone here thinks a person's income level has anything to do with how much, or little, of a man they are?
FWIW, many people participate in autocross because of a limited income. I know that if money was no object I'd like to try some track days, time trials and maybe even road racing.
