I have issues with my 1997 Volvo 850 T5 tranny position (PNP) switch, as far as I can tell. When the switch plays up, the tranny goes into limp mode, but it's not showing any codes on the ECU, but it still displays the check engine light and the upshift arrow is blinking. I don't want to bother joining a Volvo forum as this is supposed to just be my temporary beater-mobile, so I figured I'd ask for the GRM collective wisdom. Plus I don't want to drop the vehicle at a shop and have to spend hundreds on a beater while they troubleshoot.

I'd appreciate if those with any Volvo knowledge can indicate with any confidence whether it would be the PNP switch or something else? I don't think it's anything mechanical as it still shifts normally. I did have a throttle position sensor code that went away when I played with the connections so I think that was just a poor connection - if that was it, there would be a code, right?

It's been at least a decade since I was working on Volvos exclusively, but I've done quite a few PNP switches for that same symptom.

That's for the confirmation guys. The vehicle is being a bit weird in that it'll just cut the engine periodically. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it - whether it's after it gets warm from idling for an extended period or if it's just a random thing. Is cutting the engine a symptom of the PNP switch/limp mode too? I have a new PNP on the way, I'm just hoping this will solve the issue.

Isn't there a trick to clean it using the gear shift? I think I read something on the Matthews volvo site about one. And they dont make you join to search the database. Only to post.

Good luck....
