No position on the issue implied...just a good meme:

Something to look into, but right now I'm sticking to my plan of driving it into the ground. Thanks for the info!
Some interesting commentary from Maximum Bob Lutz. Apparently Piech was a hell of a guy to work for and this whole fiasco is pretty unsurprising...

I e-mailed that article to everyone at work. Talk about management for short term goals.
Bob Lutz has about as much room to criticize anyone on automotive berkeley ups as John Delorean does. As much as Bob has been running his pie hole in the automotive press recently I am beginning to believe he either has another book coming out or is running for a political appointment.
Now here is a Mangusta burning hydrocarbons, sounding awesome and looking sexy.

As a TDi owner, garbage, both in idea and reporting website. I'll believe it when it happens. JMO.

So right along the same lines as Jack "Neutron" Welch.
I gave up on working for those types of people a while ago. If they don't like my work they can replace me and try to find someone better at what I do.
All that does is poison the well and destroy the talent pool that is willing to work for you once word gets out. Which is pretty much the way that Amazon is heading as well.

Its happening, officially tomorrow.
Heads up VW owners, be careful about signing up for the "customer goodwill package:"
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/11/dont-signup-for-volkswagens-2-0l-tdi-customer-goodwill-package-yet/
So, I don't see anything that mandates having any recall done or having the DPF still in place. The prepaid card will pay for the work I've recently done to the car, and the dealer card will pay for some new replacement floormats and some other pieces that I could use. I'm going to wait for someone else to be the guinea pig though. I'm also not sure what the class action lawsuits will provide and if I can't collect if I accept this "goodwill" package.
Here are the rules: https://www.vwdieselinfo.com/program_rules/
I don't plan to accept anything from VW until the US government weighs in

VW engineers are now also admitting that they cheated to lower CO2 emissions as well. They couldn't meet their CEO's stated goals, so they cheated/faked things enough to make it seem like they'd gotten it to work so they could keep their jobs. This supports the idea that there was a "do it or get fired" attitude within the company. VW is estimating it will add $2.2 Billion more to the cost of this whole thing.
http://www.autoblog.com/2015/11/09/vw-engineers-co2-emissions-cheat/
VW has explicitly stated this goodwill program will not infringe people's rights to sue, and there's no direct language stating it blocks people as such.
I understand everyone is paranoid, but this looks to be in my eyes, a 1st step in the "we screwed up, don't hate us" process.
I signed up.
$500 at dealer only will basically buy me new snow tires this year. http://www.vwtirestore.com/ To be expected, dealer pricing on tires isn't amazing, but right on the website they show their price match gaurantee, which is a fairly reasonable physical location requirement (actual quote, with install... i.e. not online price matching).
So even with no price matching, a new set of 16" snows ends up "cheap" out of pocket when you factor in the $500 of "free money" that I didn't plan on having when I planned on going and buying fresh snow tires this month anyways.
The additional $500 "spend anywhere" money will pay for my new timing belt kit from a solid vendor (i.e. idparts.com) for ~$320. That leaves enough cash for a couple free dealership oil changes with their fancy .507 spec TDI oil.
So... the way I see it. VW just took care of this next years maintenance, rubber, and oil changes, on a car I planned on running into the ground anyways.
You all can keep your tinfoil hats, but with the spotlight as bright on VW as it is now, I really can't see them trying to pull some lawsuit shenanigans over everyone. Even TTAC retracted most of their "Beware" article posted above.
