Hey guys, hoping some of you VW guru's can help out without having to dig through the Vortex. Basicly I need to adjust the shift linkage after bushing replacement on a 92 Gti. I have no clue on how to proceed, especially since the bushings were done by the P.O.
It's a bear to find first, as reverse seems to be right under the little plastic lock out guard, and to even get it close to being in the right gate the shifter has to be pushed down past the reverse lock out. Other than that it's just really stiff to shift gears.
Thanks
Gene
There's a horse-collar shaped clamp on the main shift rod. I f you can get it first, loosen the that collar and rotate the rod a little and retighten. You should be able to adjust until you can easily do the 1-2 shift with the hook on the shifter just passing the plastic reverse lockout plate. If you can do that, the next part is to make sure the shifter is in the right spot for and aft.Same collar is loosen and slid in the direction needed. If it's stiff to shift , that's a second issue. Is there some white lithium grease on the orange bushing and the plastic ball joints in the rest of the linkage? With everything connected at the transmission end , you should be able to shift it into all 5 gears by hand.
It sounds so easy........
There are several people on line that said that no matter how how many times they messed with it they couldn't get it to shift right.
yeah trying to get it ready for it's first track outing in two weeks....found all kinds of fun stuff to fix tonight.
Email me a couple pictures after the event.
There is a special tool that holds the shift the proper distance from the plastic piece but I've never used one. Find the dimensions online and use a wood spacer and bungee the shift to the driver's door while you loosen the collar and make the adjustments.

I've always done it by feel and have had good success, but the thick end (exposed side) of an old audio cassette works too.
In reply to Spinout007: germanautoparts.com has the tool Sure makes it easier Will take 5 mins VW tools $12
Thanks guys, I'm prob gonna order the tool, but I'll give the cassette trick a try sometime today.
