And you're going to get some A-hole who shows up with a set of mounted with Hoosiers as checked baggage that will totally sweep the class.
Not that I would do something like that......

Still not a guaranteed win.

Or grab this in Atlanta and drive down? Or head down from your hometown in something like this and hope it makes it? Would you spend the whole wad on the car and sleep in the backseat and beg for food and gas? Or would you spend $1K and cover your expenses? How would you keep all of this from your significant other?

I would fly to Atlanta, buy the Celica, drive to Florida, GRM it for the weekend, drive all the way home and sell the Celica for twice what I paid for it (and I am not even fond of Toyota's).

Damn that looks clean.

Probably a Volvo 850 turbo, preferably a wagon. Ive owned two 850s and thus have some familiarity, I know I can sleep comfortably in one (even in a sedan I can fully stretch out laying diagonally with the rear seats folded down and my feet in the trunk) and it would be a nice ride for the trip down. Readily available for under half of the budget, build Home Depot MBC, crank boost until fuel cut, locate sticky tires somewhere enroute. Wouldn't be competitive, but also wouldn't be a horrendous car for the trip.

I'd buy one of the several mn12 thunderbirds around here for less than a grand. If I had time, I'd do junk yard mustang heads, intake, hubs, brakes and wheels. Then a shot of nitrous and 3.73 gears.

If not, just a Good set of tires, and a dry nitrous kit.
