Is the Q45 very similar in ride to the G35? I briefly test drove a G35 sedan many years ago but it seemed to have a nice ride.

My 2006 was a miserable place to be. The newer ones might be better, but I think you are describing the Impala
I have the Impala's corporate twin, a W-body Regal, and if I can get that rip in the driver's seat fixed it will be about the perfect highway cruiser. A W-body would get my vote in the super low buck division - you can even get them with the 3800SC for under $3000 in good shape. For a bit more money, I'd probably look into a BMW 5 series, Lexus LS400, or Chrysler LX platform.

I've already done the W-body thing with a 99 GP and a 2005 GTP CompG. I'm kinda looking for something I haven't yet experienced.

The fact is if I was taking my family for a 2500 mile drive the last thing I would want to be in is a STR. The STR is a fun toy to blast around New England. Day trips or a weekend overnight at a B&B with my wife. That is what it is for. As a reliable long distance must get you there and if I brakes NAPA will have the part to fix it and or you can find a mechanic you would let touch it car the STR is not that.

This does not mean you should not get one or some variant of AMG. Unless they are new and under warranty they are toys. They are designed to but that big grin on your face.

For a cross country trip I want reliable as gravity comfort and lots of space. I want somthing that I can sleep in if needed. Or clime on back and change. Or just park and rest and kick back.

I would take my Sierra Denali on a 2500 mile trip before I took the STR.

You know that is not a bad option a Suburban or crew cab GMC or even an Escalade or an Expedition are great places to be to eat up the highway miles. I like the height I have in my truck on the highway. I look over most cars and small suv. The other good highway vehicle I have is my wife's H2. I hate that thing around town but it is a great highway cruising vehicle and I sits another 4-6 inches taller than my truck. It is also appointed better than Cadillac's.

So yes for what you are doing I an not recommending a STR type vehicle.

Now if you want to get a car that you will be grinning ear to ear every time you drive it and you will often need to seek medical help for a grin that lasts more than 4 hours a STR or e55 or some other Merc is exactly what you want.

This. There are endless different hwy cruisers out there but if I am gonna be all day in a car I want it to be fun. And comfy. And fast. And roomy and at least somewhat stealthy. This narrows down the list quite some bit.

In reply to Jay_W:

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for.

The trip is just one thing, the car is still going to have to be an engaging vehicle for me when we're back home and I'm only using it for the school run. I have no interest in vans or even most SUVs. And that's kind of the problem with the LS 400, perfectly competent, just boring. Although I could try my hand at the whole VIP thing.

I'm still feeling an XJR or even a standard XJ8. The Mercs could work but I'm probably more Leary of them than is warranted. I think I could get into a Volvo but I'm really wanting to stay away from FWD this time.

I wish I could go back in time and keep my 96 Impala SS. Not the most luxurious thing in the world but it was fun.

Not exactly luxurious, but you can get used 2012+ Caprices for low teens. They're basically a more generic looking, long wheelbase G8. Plenty of power from the 6.0LS, RWD, massive trunk space for luggage, and super sleeper since most people just assume they're a Malibu or Impala. The back seats on most are vinyl, which should make clean up from kid hauling a breeze.

If you get tired of one in stock form, it's got the entire LS aftermarket and the rest is a mix of Camaro, G8, and CTS-V, which offers quite a bit of support for chassis/brake upgrades from the factory and aftermarket.

Probably a little better ride than the G. It also had the best cruise control of any car I've owned. I don't think it varied more than one MPH, even on hills. It was a '94 and I owned in the late '90's, so not sure how they compare today, but I loved that car. For the time, it was seriously quick with a 4.5 V8.

The G35 was also nice, rode well, and was fast also. It had the benefit of sharing suspension pieces with the 350Z, but always thought the Infiniti versions drove better.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably give the Q the nod, but it would be a slim margin.

Really though, 12k budget hmmm...Something with an AMG. They go from highway cruiser to highway cruise missile within a few inches of the right foot.
