Says who?
2 have made it (no, 3 counting the Zamboni) and 1 is in the current issue of GRM.
I think it was for $2007 that they changed the rules to ban kit cars. Has to start as a production car.
Dude still hasn't gotten back to me.
If a customer had the cash, I am sure that AMG would have built up a 420 SEL but it is unlikely you found one. More likely is that someone bought some AMG parts (wheels for instance) and got the AMG logo for the trunklid.

Kit cars are not Locosts.
Old rules banned kit cars, but allowed Locosts.
Current rules allow both.
Locosts have always been welcome (as long as I've been around, since 2004), but are judged in a separate class (since they are not production vehicles)
That's a brilliant car for hooning around in. What was once an '80s poseur mobile is now ironically cool, in a gaudy, retro sort of way.

oops, I appear to have been mistaken
Guy isn't returning my calls.
I did get a reply on the 83 320i Sport, though... with better pics.
We'll see what happens. I'm not particularly looking for another car at the moment, but if i could pick either up for around $500 i don't think i could resist.
A business acquaintence had a mid-80's AMG 300E that he bought new. No, not the Hammer and it still had the 6.
As far as i could tell the AMG package was little more than a body kit, lowered suspension, and custom rims. No mechanical mods that I could ever detect. I passed it up for something like $2500... just did nothing for me and for all the world looked fake... and likely was... but was sold new by the Mercedes dealer like that.
While not a Hammer, I was always a fan of the mid-90's MB E500. Built in conjunction with Porsche, it sported 326 hp!

So basically i should continue to hound him, sell the wheels, and if the rest of the car is gross, just scrap it.
I love the 80s amg cars, bring a Trailor had a collection of 1980s amgs awhile back( here http://bringatrailer.com/2008/12/07/euro-spec-1980s-amg-mercedes-benz-collection/ ) If you go to the link theres even a G wagon, and the pictures look like there all from saddams under ground car park.
While $1k sounds sweet, that aint a cheap car to keep and feed.
I'm so glad I've decided I don't need another project like that, so I'm not going up the road for it.
I'd love to find an AMG modified m110 engine. They won't roast tires but for a 30 year old car it will do over 100mph and hold it. They were built back then. I have pics of the kit I think it wasn't too radical, maybe oversided valves with high lift cams or something along those lines.
I have heard of modified 300E but the best version of that car to get is the 300CE 24V. Someone I went to school with had an AMG modified 500E and all they did was change out the cams to 3/4 cams, I don't know what that means, but it sounds good.
Just remember that "mercedes are for those who HAD not HAVE money."
