I recently just got a square 17x8.5 Apex ARC-8 wheel setup for my e46 330i track car (HPDE) and I am wondering what others run for tires. I was just going to get a 245/40 17 but then I was wondering if a 255 would fit without rubbing. I have a track aliment and setup with 3 degrees of camber up front and 2.5 degrees in the rear. I have not rolled any of the fenders.
I am curious what others have run without rubbing?
In my e36 M3, which is quite similar, on the same size wheel, a 245/40 17 worked very well all around.
What offset are the wheels?
I had 255/40 17s on my E36 M3 with no fender rolling. Wheels were 17x9. I believe offset was 44, but it was 15 years ago so I could be off. On 8.5s, I'd probably go with the 245.
I recently bought an E46 330ci ZSP that came on a set of 255/40/17 Falken 660s. Car is lowered on some Bavauto lowering springs and has some camber plates up front, doesn't rub at all and handles exceptionally well.
In reply to CyberEric :
I just bought ET42 offset based on Bimmerworld's rims offered for the cars in the class.
I have fit 275 Hoosiers (and 295 Toyo RRs) on mine, but A) it's an M3 and B) the fenders have been heavily massaged (paint work required afterwards).
Hoosiers:
Toyos:
Both on 18x10s. The 295s could probably have done with 11s, but I only ran them the one time.
I've seen 255/40R17s done on 17x8.5s (square style 68s with a small spacer in the front) and no rubbing issues. No fender massaging was required for that.
I'm remembering I did have a small spacer on the front of my car, think it was like 10mm.
I can never remember if 40 is further out or in board compared to 44 ET....

OP,
With fender flares and you can fit 295s. Hope this helps :-).
I'd love to see some pictures of what car you ended up buying. Especially if it is a sedan, as they make sexy track cars!
From the ARC website:
They mention suspension since coilovers typically have smaller ID springs allowing more inboard clearance.
