Need to make quick decision on car. 1988 xjs v12. Bad trans otherwise beautiful car. Auto.

What trans is it? I know some jags have chevy th400, is this one? Those are a dime a dozen and it would be worth making an offer on car. If its some $$$$$$ jag specific unit i plan to pass. Surfing from phone yields poor results. Thanks!

I don't have the answer, but it sounds as if the Quaterbreed is something to consider.

I'm pretty sure that if its a three speed its a TH400. I've been plotting on an XJS with a bad trans too.

Jag specific bellhousing? Im sure i can rebuild a th400 i've done 700r4 and th350. Have a th400 rebuild book and might even have a kit.

Yeah GM TH400, at least the internals are TH400. Early ones used Borg-Warner automatic.

the one i'm looking at looks just as clean, has under 90k, and is half the price/obo.

TH 400 with Jag specific housing. There is an adaptor kit for TH 700(?). Also one for a five speed manual, which is the way I'd go, though tougher to do with pedal install.

I saw that one on CL, looks nice. I briefly though about researching T5 swap info but passed on.

Find the xjs book and read. There are a lot of parts and a couple can burn the car down. The book is a free download and very comprehensive. I have looked at xjs for years and never pulled the trigger. 88 is one of the last year's for the older ignition system. Read up!
