Remember that Roadkill episode where they built Nascarlo, the Monte Carlo that got cut up and put on a circle track framework? I'm thinking exactly that only this time they use a Jag XJ-S body to make it just that much more exotic. Should be extremely competitive.
Or copy the original tiny wheel shadow can am car,it effectively resembles are go kart with a huge fuel injected big block .
Locost-style DIY tube frame chassis with an LS4 or Caddy big block transverse FWD drivetrain mounted in back. Probably no easy way to do that with a stick, so maybe rig up a flappy paddle setup for the slushbox? Don't know if that is possible for the Caddy. Find a fiberglass body to plop on top of it - doesn't someone make a Lola T70 replica? Proceed to scare yourself silly with your giant V8 powered go kart.

Okay, so assume generic two seat tube frame with a mid-engine mount (either longitudinal or transverse). What suspension/uprights would you choose as your first choice? Miata, Corvette, Spitfire as a function of cost/weight/performance...?

Didnt someone already do this involving some promises made to the devil and some of an ls1 Camaro? I seem to remember safety being reinvented after that one.

Depends on ultimate grip levels. I was just under our ND and the front uprights and arms are lovely and I'd like to build a car based on them, but I'm not sure 800hp and 315 Hoosiers are the way to go with those parts. For that I'd base a car around Corvette parts.
Incidentally, the Enviate is probably getting toward the pointy end of what's possible in a shed. Reading about it's capabilities (4g in corners) and I'm certain I can't drive anything like it.
4 cylinder -Miata suspension.
8 cylinder - Corvette suspension.
We already have the answer.

All This needs is a bit more enginering, A bunch more Safety,And the body could have been a mold for Glass. That Is Grassroots Tho..
I feel like the UK's 750 Motor Club's 'RGB' class deserves mention in this thread
iirc, originally intended to get MOT'd (i.e. road legal) bike-engined kit cars into a racing group. It's morphed over the last few years to more dedicated 'dedicated built for racing' kits.
but it still seems accessible

That's along the lines of what I had in mind but they need two seats.

That car with another 500$ in money to play with and a unlimited safety budget would hve been downright insane. I love it.
Since we are still on topic though but not two seats. DP1 car would be INSANE. They pop up on BAT every now and again at 1/2 new cost and they are nutty fast.
There's also Cody Loveland's special.

OK, so how about this:
Tube frame, fiberglass body, VW Type IV engine (think Porsche 914) built from scratch in my garage.

Something like that with a bit more variability in drivetrain is exactly what I was thinking when I made the original post.
You say you built that yourself? Got any more information, perhaps a Build Thread would be appreciated by The Hive?

What if it's a V6?
Then you're doing it wrong.

Okay, then, straight 6 D-Jag...

Take an old Yamaha Banshee and make a Formula Banshee out of it.
Like Mazdeuce said, it works in my head.
Add a big bore kit made from Bombadier/Rotax snowmobile engine and you’ve got a winner.

Here's another example...
Make that frame 2 seats and that's something like what I had in mind. He appears to be using a early Corvair Swing Axle set up on the back. Any suggestions on a common, light and simple IRS that could be used in a similar application? Spitfire? Fiat? Miata looks too heavy...
This is an Ambro. Fibreglass shell, square tubing frame. Datsun 240 suspension, brakes, rear end. 327 small block with 4 speed. The thottle merely makes it go sideways. I tried autocrossing it. Not enough tire.
That's my friend Don who built it and drives it at VRG and other events in the Northeast when not driving his 1959 Fiat powered OSCA formula junior.
