I'm in a dilemma and not sure how to proceed, nor do I know what would be considered fair....

Serious question time.

Wife's Fiat 500L has been at the dealer since July 7th. Just heard from them today that it will be another 6 weeks for the newest part to come in. She is in a loaner (going on a month tomorrow). I could demand all my car payments, insurance payments and a new car, but that to me, seems to be ridiculous. I don't think the dealer is 100% at fault. I don't think Fiat is 100% at fault. I think they're all clueless. Again, We DO have a loaner until it gets fixed. What do we do?

They are the only dealer within 100 miles. So, I can't take it somewhere else (very easily), nor do I think it would make a difference. Lemon law stops at 24,000 miles, we're at 27,000, so no recourse there. We are at their mercy until it gets repaired.

Wife's headed there today to try and talk to the GM. Not sure, if anything, would satisfy us at this point.

Are we being silly to even question it? That's kinda where I'm leaning. They're working on it, we have a new loaner (got it with 83 miles, already have over 1300 on it). Should we be satisfied? I don't expect this newest fix to fix it and am waiting for the dealer to tell us to pound sand and go somewhere else.

What would the hive mind do?

Full story if you're interested:
1) Got a CEL showing "turbo underboost" Nothing really noticeable on drive ability.

2) Took in in and dealer asks, "Is it a 500L?" Apparently they had seen it before. Said if they had a new turbo in, should be a "quick" fix.

3) Had to call several times until I could talk to someone. Been fixed "for a while" and "we called several times"... Pick it up on the 16th. Pulling out of the dealer at WOT, stutters the entire time.

4) Back into dealer. No techs available to take a ride in the car. Drove the service advisor and he could feel it, thought it needed a "tuneup" I take it home that Thursday night and just nurse it.

5) Dealer calls Friday and says "So, are you bringing it in today?" Me, "Uh, didn't know I was supposed to, I'll have it to you 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning."

6) They deal with Fiat who has them go through the same steps as before. Somewhere in there the tech drops the motor on his hand and breaks it (we've been reminded of this almost every conversation). Finally hear that they'll replace the turbo and intercooler. Parts will be in soon, should be done around the 5th of August.

7) No worries, wife and I are out of town until the 8th. No calls. Called them on the 10th and "the parts just came in" "oh, and we fired the other service advisor" "and we're short handed so the guy is working on it at night when he can".

8) At this point, we're getting frustrated, so they offer us a Toyota Yaris (stripped) rental.

9) Get a call that the car is ready on the 27th. I go pick it up, ask the service advisor "The tech DID test drive it, correct?" Was assured he had. Everything's ready to go. Sorry it took so long. Hope we don't see you for a while. yada yada yada

10) Pull out of the dealer, second gear, full throttle (BTW, all warmed up, I let it warm up before leaving). Now the stutter is more of a severe bucking on acceleration. Crap!! Go right back in. Of course, no techs to ride in the car. Service advisor rides in it again. Obviously there is a problem. Back to the dealer, calls his boss and talks to the techs. They can't look at it for 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, they're that backed up. I could probably keep driving it. Should be safe. Me, "Uh, no..."

11) Wife calls to explain that a Yaris is NOT equivalent to her almost loaded 500L. They promise her a new 500X loaner on the 1st of September. She gets the loaner with 83 miles on it.

12) We call FiatCares. They'll look into it. Hear from the dealer "since you called Fiat Cares, we have to update you that we're waiting on a prognosis from Fiat"

13) Heard today that it's a turbo solenoid and the part won't be in for 6 weeks. That would put us at 18 weeks (save for one day) that they have had the car....

I would kick back, plan a couple of long road trips in the loaner and rack up the miles on their car while yours sits idle.

Isn't the same kind of dealer supply issue that caused Fiat to falter the last time they tried selling in the US?

Put diesel into the loaner. You'll have your car back within a week

I hate to hear stories like this. I really thought Fix It Again Tony was a thing of the past.

Went through something similar with a Grand Cherokee back in the late '90's and fuel pumps. It ended being down almost a year in total and a half dozen pumps while waiting on a redesign from Chrysler. Very frustrating. Nothing really to add except the outcome was not what you'd want to hear. They eventually did fix it correctly, but it was dumped right afterwards, as the transmission failed in short order.

It's enough to keep me from buying a Fiat. Air freight from Italy shouldn't take six weeks.

In Connecticut, it would be a lemon, with very little effort. Question is, do you want to keep driving a FIAT or would you rather drive something else?

Is the loaner equivalent or better to your car that's getting fixed? If so I would just keep piling on the miles. Maybe suspend the insurance on your car since it's off the road.

Terrible story. That sucks. I guess I will continue my lifelong streak of never going to a Dodge dealer nor a Fiat dealer.

I would be pissed off that you were relegated to nights. Tired mechanic having worked all day on other customers cars now working on yours. No thanks. I would be matching up the chain of command and demand satisfaction and an explanation as to why you are being treated as a second class customer.

Also nice guys will get walked on. Stand your ground and demand first class ser if. Sounds to me that aside from the parts issue they are putting you as a lower priority because they can.

Thank you sir may I have another comes to mind.

Ohya walk the new car lot and see if they have a car that they can pull the part from. Then bring tho to there attention.

It's insane, and you may save some folks the aggravation that you are going through by telling your story. If there's a bright side, it's that you are driving their car. The uncertainty is whether or not they will ever truly fix your car, and that is unforgiveable. Eighteen weeks is completely insane. Nice try, Fiat. NOT!

Not just Fiat.

Seems to be an industry malady.

Ask a Fiesta owner about clutch paks for the DSP6.

Not mine fortunately.

Car39 is on it. The only question to really ask here is do you really want it anymore? If it were me I'd have a hard time saying yes knowing that kind of service is always a real possibility.

Drive the loaner, and don't buy weird E36 M3 next time.

If it ends up working for a week, but ends up quitting again on you, order letters that say "Lemon at 27,000 miles - fix it again, tony!" From a sign maker. Slap them on the side, and park it outside the dealership. See how quickly it gets fixed.

In reply to Streetwiseguy: If people dont buy new wierd, there isnt any old weird.

To OP - the biggest problem I would have is the way the dealer is blowing you off when you ask for a tech to ride with you.

Update and responses.

Update:
Wife went to the dealer today to get a new temp plate for the loaner (it had expired). Talked to the service manager (not advisor). He has instituted a stop production to pull one off the line. Will be here in 3-5 days. Was not happy that the advisor hasn't been calling her.
He said that if the part does not come or if it does not fix it, they will buy back the car. Period. I was (and still am) worried about that option. We are upside down on the car, supposedly the gap insurance will cover the rest. But with two job losses in the past year, our finances/credit are in a shambles. Hopefully, that won't matter too much... Not sure of what our options will be.

Responses:
1) She actually likes the car and would buy another. Plus, I have a 500T. We are not the "my car is bad so ALL Fiat's suck" type of people. Things happen. Lemon's happen. Not a specific sign of "overall" problems. Heck, my car has the same motor. (as do all the Abarth's on this board)
2) Up until this point, we've had great service with the dealer.
3) Am trying to balance going nuclear and being nice. Again, if we went nuclear, would we be left in the cold (or having to start some legal bs that we can't afford) and stuck with a broken car that we still make payments on? I know the board will often skewer the idea of car payments, but that's our reality. Can't fix it after the fact.
4) Can't drop insurance while they have it as I assume the lender would frown upon that.
5) She's still planning on talking to the GM (who, of course, wasn't there).

Seems like we'll have some sort of resolution within the week. I'm assuming it won't fix it and it'll be a buyback. Will just need to figure out how that will work.

And one note about modern dealers. I'm about 99% sure that most of these problems come from techs who aren't mechanics. Modern technology is cool when it works, but I think that the struggle has been the computer doesn't tell them what to do and they don't know how to troubleshoot.

Thats good to read. I leased my 500L for 2 years and rather enjoyed it. My mother-in-law bought one after riding in mine and enjoys her's as well.
