Daughter's 2011 Subaru Legacy has brake issues. New pads, rotors and calipers all around, about six months ago, but the problem came back. The rear brakes seem to bind, when backing up. They sound like a box of gravel, too, but the pads and rotors are in good shape.

Is there something deeper than just changing parts on this car, like resetting a sensor or something?

Does it have drum in hat rear ebrake?

I don't remember, from when I replaced the rotors, but it does have electronic parking brake, not a conventional pull-up lever or push-down pedal. Just a silly tab on the dashboard to flick.

He beat me to it^^^^^^^^^^.

What type of parking brake does it have? is it integrated into the caliper or a small drum mechanism inside the hat of the rotor? maybe just, maybe if it has the little drum deal something has let loose in there and it rattling around like a loose or stuck shoe?

Don't know Subaru, but VW/Audi requires a scantool to open the rear caliper for a pad change and then again to reset/calibrate the rear caliper with the new pads.

Maybe it wasn't done correctly when they were replaced?

Must have been a sticky pad in the bracket that wouldn't back off when pedal pressure was released. The inside pad on one was worn down to the backing plate, but the other three pads were fine. I reassembled everything with a new set and greased the bracket with brake grease.

Every Subaru I have ever seen (and I have owned 7 of them) with rear discs have a rear drum parking brake built-in to the inside of the rotor.

I bet it is sticking.

Parking brakes are my nemesis. In fact, I'm working on the one on my BMW today. The only solution that I have found is to reset and start from zero. Disassemble and clean everything, then reassemble and adjust, starting at the wheels and then the handbrake lever. Shortcuts will only cost you time and aggravation. It's a total pain in the ass, but it's only way to do it.

What a dumbass way to build a car.

The drum-in-hat parking brake was fine. With the caliper and pads off, the rotor spun freely.

Sound like that problem is still there. One of the pads is still not releasing. Either the piston is not retracting or some slider is still stuck. Not familiar enough with Subaru brakes yet to tell which.

Exactly what I was thinking. Another reason I will never own one.

They are very expensive to replace when you have to have the car towed to the dealership when someone hits the parking brake button when there is no rotor or pad in place. They keep pushing until they eject the cylinder for the caliper.

brake calipers that require a scan tool?

yeah, automotive engineers have run out of useful stuff to design, so they are moving into the useless stuff.. give it 5 years and these stupid calipers will be required on every new car by the government because think of the children...

But physically pulling up a mechanical handbrake is really hard.

It needs a button...and a couple motors...and a control module. What can go wrong?

They use the scantool thing to frighten off amateurs from doing their own brake work. The rest of the population will think they should bring their car to the dealer. That works for VW until someone on this board figures out a work-around and puts the how-to video on YouTube.

it's not all bad if it automatically engages when put into park...

Until you need to try to push the car around the garage with no battery in it for whatever reason..

You'll need to log in to post.
