It's hard to compare a turd of a NA Subaru engine to one of the best 4 cylinders of all time. Compare that torque to an S54; and it would be a much different story. The Honda 4 cylinders are incredible, but NA 4 cylinders will never be torquey compared to 6 and 8 cylinders with much great displacements (which was the comparison he was making).
I guess none/few ever made it over the pond, but a couple of years ago when the m3 e30s where track hacks around here there were a budget alternative for people with smaller wallets. The almighty 320is,anyone remember that? Also called the Italian m3 since it was sold there due to tax reasons, it was a regular e30 but with a downstroked 2 liter version of the s14. I wonder what they are worth today?
I really think the classic car bubble is going to pop so hard in a few years.

320is command a pretty penny in the states too. There are not too many though and not a lot of people know what they are or how they came to be.
