Looking at the bottom of the cars (and the exhaust pipes) as they were rolling over, I'd guess most were front wheel drive, unless you see the wide body rear.

No not cheap, the two cars and all parts were 10k and the seller is not hurting for money. The cars have not been touched since the mid 80s. The alpine engines are very rare and sell for big money just by themselves in Europe.

And really that's all I'd be interested in were the engine(s) and maybe a transmission if they are of the 5 speed variety.  Some initial research proved inconclusive of if I could slap one of those Alpine heads on my R8's 688-02 block. Probably not.
