I sold a Locost chassis and the buyer drove to Connecticut to pick it up. From Iowa. Straight through. Then he turned around with the intention of driving all the way home. He only made it to Ohio before sleep caught up with him and he had to find a motel.
Kind of OT but kind of along the same vein, I just finished reading Alexander Roy's book "The Driver". In the final chapters he goes up against "the wall", attempting to drive cross-country, non-stop, from NY to LA in less than 32 hours and 7 minutes. When I first started reading it I had trouble immersing myself in the story as it just seemed to be the exploits of a rich guy who inherited his wealth from his father's hard work and was trying to squander his fortune in the most irresponsible fashion possible, but if I had his money I'd be doing the same thing... I would have caged the M5 though.
Reading that story further solidified my desire to BABE my Brighton.
With 1 driver, I've only barely managed 1000 miles. 1400 miles is pretty nuts.
Edit: 1400 miles is completely manageable if you allow for Autobahn speeds...

It took me 32hrs and 20min to get from Phoenix to Columbus, OH. He must have been booking it.
In reply to EvanB:
For the first half of the trip he and his co-driver's AVERAGE speed, including fuel stops, was in the low, nearly mid 90's. Not that I advocate or in any way condone driving at illegal or dangerous speeds on public roads.
He participated in several Gumballs and, if I remember correctly, a Bullrun also.
Between my brother and I- we made it from Minneapolis MN to Norman OK. In 8 hours. In an FB GSL-SE. With no muffler. How we did not get arrested, is unfathomable.

Not with my stuff!
It barely fit on the trailer which is for sale now. I've never hauled anything this heavy so once loaded the fenders had to come off. (they're bolted)
Too many tractor trailers. It was balanced OK but I'll never be a long haul trucker and God Bless E-Z Pass!
The 180,000 mile 4-Runner performed well but it doesn't matter, how many places can you put your feet?
This is my last big car fetch, believe me.
I drove from the SF Bay area to Massachusetts in 52 hours once, solo.
I was fueled by caffeine, junk food, and an all consuming rage at the airlines that has screwed up my flight.
I think I could have made it in under 48 hours if there hadn't been snow around Chicago.
Lond Island, NY to San Diego. Solo in 2 1/2 days. 1976 Toyota Corolla 4 speed, 1300cc engine. I did stop when the hallucinations got bad. Best miles: Shreeport,LA to Hobbs, NM. Left at 7 am, arrrived at 9:30 pm-ish. I was heading back to college.

a guy i used to work with got paid by the mile to tow a customer's two vintage racecars to the track and he once did Newburyport MA to Monterey CA in about that same 52 hours.... with a 54 foot trailer behind him.
We did Saratoga to Duluth, MN, down to Omaha, and back to Saratoga one time in 63 hours. Not sure if that was better or worse average than Groton, CT to Omaha, then back to Groton in 56 hours, but the Groton trip was a solo drive, and by the middle of PA I'd swear the road turned purple...
Ah, to be young again.
On the bright side, a 3.0 V-6 5 speed 4-Runner got 16 mpg hauling a 3400 lb. Caddy on a trailer at 64 mph.

I did drive from Lake Nipissing, Ontario (not far from Sudbury) to Charlottesville on Friday, took 17.5 hours, I took the long way, with a stop at Watkin's Glen (because I could). At dinner, I found out that NASA-MA needed more workers, so I got up the next morning and rode a further 2.5 hours to work in 100+ weather. Coming home on Sunday afternoon, I did see a couple of things that I knew weren't there. Ah to be young and stupid again, as opposed to just plain stupid. At least I have being old and stupid to look forward to.
42 MPG in the TDI Jetta, 51 on the WeeStrom. Not towing anything though.
Charleston, SC to Silverton, Colorado in 41 hours and change, but that was swapping drivers every ~3 hours. My third drive session was at around 3 AM from Colorado Springs to somewhere near Ouray. At one point, I was slapping myself to stay awake.
1206 miles in 1204 minutes......East Texas to West Texas and back. Picked up a lot of time west of Fort Worth...only saw 2 cars and they both passed me when I was at 85 mph+. Well, I actually only saw 1 well..yellow corvette. The other blew past me so fast that he was unrecognizable taillights disappearing over the hill before I could finish my one syllable...umm...battle cry?
Bruce
did SanFransico to Detroit in 32 hours. 2 drivers, fuel stops only. I've seen too much if I-80 over the years...
Man, I feel like a wienie after some of these posts. Done Austin to L.A. (~1400 miles) in 23 hours a few times, but there has always been at least two of us.
You were towing? I believe there's a correction factor for that. You might be able to rightly claim that you covered more than 1400 miles.
You'll need to log in to post.
