The penalty should have been reviewed by NFL NY, it should become a standard.

It wasn't.

Detroit took two more tries. After the free penalty play they should have kicked and let the Defense eat.

The rules guy that they had on the broadcast said it was an illegal formation anyways, along with another penalty that I can't remember right now, all of which were five yards regardless.

The fifteen yard penalty for tripping (when Dallas wasn't even the team that should have been called on), making it 1st and 25 hurt Dallas quite a bit, as did McCarthy's dumb play calls down the stretch.

They are calling it an illegal formation because 70 is what was called as being a reported eligible receiver who then was covered by another lineman/tight end/reciever.

You can clearly run an unbalanced line. Also the NFL rules state you can call or signal or however else have "unlimited" eligible receivers. So really it's a moot point given the rules and no it would not be an illegal formation. Officials have to pay the berkeley attention.

From what I have read, the rules guy who claimed it was an illegal formation corrected himself. It was a legal formation even if 68 didn't declare.  As for 70, it could have been 85 in his same spot, and 85 would not be eligible to catch the ball. Formation is still legal.

I agree that the tripping hurt, but it wasn't really that bad- had Dallas ran the ball 3 times, their kicker would have made it anyway, and left Detroit with about 45 seconds less time. The only reason it ended up mattering was the playcalling by Dallas.

So it looks like the team we're making fun of this week is the Eagles.

I'm good with that.  smiley

I feel bad for KC fans out there, you get the only game on peacock, meaning you have to pay more money to see the game.

And it continues this week.  I really thought they would have their crap together for this game. If they win their playoff game it'll be a berking miracle.

Trashing talking requires confidence... and that left the Linc over a month ago...

Man, the NFL loves narratives, and next week it gets Stafford returning for Ford Field and Goff facing the team that unceremoniously dumped him. Not to mention the Packers facing their old coach.

I'm at a loss to explain the Eagles. There's too much talent on that team for them to fall apart like they have.

It's easy for us Lions fans why the Eagles are struggling- Matt Patricia.  He's running the defense.  Seems like he's totally coached himself out of a career.

You'd think so, but he somehow keeps getting jobs. Once you're in the NFL coaches club, it seems you're there for life.

As an Atlanta native, the Falcons never fail to disappoint. Too bad it's what they are best at doing.

After this debacle and crash, if anyone hires him, they deserve to get this same result.

As for the first playoff game in Detroit in over 30 years...  I'm actually happier facing the Rams and Stafford than Green Bay.  The Packers are playing quite well, and they embarrassed us over T-Giving.  While the Rams are playing well, too- it's not quite as stressful.  As much as people want to make a thing for Goff, I'm betting he's totally moved on- the only "feelings" are the continued good will to Stafford.

I'm anticipating a shootout. The Lions cannot cover good receivers, and the Rams have two. It's a bummer that La Porta is going to miss at least one game, he's been a really important chain-mover for us this year, as well as a legit endzone threat. But, with the Lions at home and the crowd on their side, I still think they can do it.

What's your take on the whole end-of-game controversy where the Saints scored that last TD?

Yeah, I have a feeling that once the locals figure that out, there's going to be a significant reaction...

Playoff predictions, anyone?  My FB feed is pushing the Green Bay narrative, but they've come out and laid too many no-shows this year for me to buy in.

Pete Carroll out at Seattle.  Kind of a stunner there.

Edit Vrabel was out at TN yesterday.  Lots of coaching opportunities to apply for!

Belechick out in New England.  8 coaching openings right now.

Forgive me Phily and Dallas fans- but can I hope they both have a horrible weekend to fire their coaches, too?  That would make some fun watching other teams suffer.

(on the college front, kind of a surprise to see Saban retire.  Makes the Rose Bowl win slightly more satisfying)

Does Jerry fire him if he tanks the playoff game? That would be awesome.

I see the Detroit game coming down to three things:

1: Defensive line vs Offensive line on both teams. The first team to 3 sacks wins.

2: Coverage. Specifically is Detroit going to play zone? If they do Kupp and Nacua will each have 200 yard games. Sutton can't cover. Put Anzalone on Williams, CJGJ on Nacua, and Melifonwu on Kupp manned up all game. Be VIOLENT at the line of scrimmage. Use 4 back in zone occasionally sending Campbell or Reeves Maybin in on the blitz.

3: Turnovers. Both Goff and Stafford throw bad balls twice per game. Be in position to turn it over.

My prediction: Detroit 38 LAR 35 in overtime

Belichick is not at all surprising, but still shocking.

What is both surprising and shocking is that Eberflus is still employed. The only thing I can figure is that they looked around at all of the openings and decided to stick it out another year. Seems like an interesting decision, at best.

But, for the most part, they were still winning.  Especially looking at last season where everyone thought the trade with Denver would take Seattle down, but he brought Geno Smith from the depths of his career to playing incredibly well.

Although, given Siriani's on the hairy edge, even though the team went to the SB last year, nothing is really surprising in the NFL coaching area.
