So the wife and I haven't been getting many great night's sleep for a while now and are beginning to suspect mattress issues. This has started the conversation as to what to buy next. We are considering either a sleep number king or two twin long conventional mattresses ad we both like very different things in a mattress. Anyways, I was hoping some of you might have some experiences with sleep number beds that you'd share.

They (Sleep Number) spend a lot of money on commercials.

I slept on one once. It would have needed to go up to about 800 to have been firm enough. I am not a fan.

I like to sleep in a canoe as the variable height hard surfaces inflect the pain I enjoy so much and I always tip it over in my sleep causing me to drown to death which is fun.

His post history and start date look legit. Don't think he's a canoe.

Ive slept on a few sleep numbers. 3 in different hotels, 1 in a friends house. I am not a fan. Even if you and your wife have the same number, there is a middle part that is uncomfortable.

I would go with twin XLs and a king mattress topper.

I had one for a number of years, if I recall it was the C2 model. Was the basic one without the factory topper. That one got firm enough but if you do get the fancier ones with toppers it is true that it might not be firm enough. I've since switched to a Tempur Pedic one (the ones that don't get too hot) which I much prefer over the Sleep Number.

Had one for the past 20 years & been happy with it.

They make models without the piece of rigid foam in between the two air bladders that mtn mentions. The fancy features that they try & push you towards are not worth the $. You don't need the " whisper quiet" motor, etc. Also you can buy or build a platform for much less than theirs. They will tell you that they won't warrantee it if you don't buy their platform to try & get you to buy theirs. I don't know if that actually is the case as mine is twice as old as the warrantee with no problems yet.

I have the basic one with 2 chambers and 2 remotes, normal pump motor & built the platform myself. Total cost was about the same as a name brand mattress at the time. I have no idea what they cost now.

Personally, no.  Some friends have one - a split-side, adjustable (can sit up in it) version.  They have been happy for the ~10 years they've had it.

We've had one for something like 10 years, and both my wife and I like it a lot. One of the air bladders has developed a slow leak after the last house move though, so it might be time to refurbish it or replace it. Ours was the entry level dual chamber one, and I don't see any reason to go to a more expensive version.

Sleep number for 12 years and mostly happy with it. We have one with 2 chambers(his & hers), but between them is "another mans land". It has foam between the 2 chambers that breaks down and creates a hollow void. Every 3-4 years,I measure the area between the 2nair chambers,  hit a local foam supplier and buy a piece to go in there. We like the bed and would do it again.

I had one. Briefly. Hated it. 0/10 would not recommend. My ikea mattress is better.

We bought the most basic one because I thought I could just keep replacing mattress toppers rather than have something built into the mattress that would eventually rut.  I regret it. It's never been what I wanted with any topper I've found.

There's a couple of possibilities.  First, I shouldn't have cheaped out and just bought one of the mid-range models with more padding. Second, I should have just bought something else.  Right now, I'm leaning towards something else.

Most of the scuttlebutt on the intarwebs say that sleep number beds are a gimmick and don't really work.  My chiropractor uses "sleep number" as a punchline to describe anyone with poor posture or back pain.

Do your research and make your own tests.  If they offer a 30-nights-free deal, it can't hurt.  I have never enjoyed the one at my sister's house.  Impossible to get it right.

I swapped to a dirt-cheap memory foam mattress about three years ago and I am in love.  Zinus.  At the time I bought my Full mattress, I paid $168.  I figured even if it only lasts one year, I could buy 15 of them for the price of one high-end mattress and have a fresh, new mattress every spring.

We have a tempur pedic that's about 11 years old & hasn't really been comfortable for the last 6 years, but we buy a new topper for it every couple years & suffer through. I was talking to my primary care doc about sleep problems about a year ago & she said they have one of the cheaper sleep number beds & love it. She also said don't spend the $$ for their higher-end ones, just buy a topper & replace it as needed.

We plan to check one out eventually, but have other things to spend the $$ on first.

I stand by my costco Novafoam mattress or whatever it is called.  Still worth it 5? years on.

No.

One thing they DON'T tell you is that they are the worst beds to have sex on. The way they're built, you have two air bladders (just cheap air mattresses) held in a frame of foam blocks. If you do not lay in the dead center of the air bladder, you start rolling to the edge of it, and get wedged in between the air bladder and the foam. Try to spoon in the middle of the night? Get stuck in between the bladders. Try to have sex on it? Get wedged in between the bladder and foam. Sit on the edge of the bed? Wind up with your butt buried between the bladder and foam. Have *sex* on the edge of the bed? Even worse...

That's why the store demos have you lay in *exactly* the spots they want you to. Not to keep things clean and sanitary, but because anywhere else you lay suuuuuucks.

Wife and I recently got a latex mattress. That is TOTALLY worth the premium.

Same. We love ours.

We don't notice any divots, per se, but do notice a very slight hump in the middle. It has not impacted our comfort, though I'm sure if we compared it to a brand new one the brand new one would be better. We're planning on replacing it with the same thing in about 2-4 years, whenever we (1) start to notice it isn't as comfortable, and (2) see it on sale again in that time frame. I think we could get another 2-3 years more out of it from that point, but we figure that it is better than waiting until it is bothering us.

I'm just sitting here imagining a big rubber bed in context of the rest of your post laughing my ass off.  I'd post a pertinent scene from Silicon Valley with Russ Hanneman, but this is a family site and all.

It's different from that. Latex foam. Not latex rubber. Feels sorta like memory foam, except you don't sink into it. Less bouncy than an innerspring mattress.

Just got rid of our 6 year old tempurpedic because her side had oddly lost support in the hip area. We went from a king to 2 XL twins because she really really really wanted to have an adjustable base. Needed the split king because if she wants to adjust it I am left to sleep in comfort on a level surface.

Figure out what firmness levels each of you prefer and get a split king is my suggestion. In our case it should save us money because I probably could have slept on the tempurpedic for at least another 2 years. We're both average height/normal weight people.

I think the only thing worse to try having sex on is a waterbed.

Another Zinus fan here. I've been sleeping on one for about three years, too. Much prefer it to the name-brand memory-foam mattress that preceded it (and costs almost 10 times more). I will never buy another mattress store mattress.

So apparently this quote jinxed me!  Air chamber went flat last night...found some youtube videos and did the diagnostics today.  I have a leak in the air chamber.  Not too big.  I couldn't hear air leaking out and it takes more than 30 minutes with me laying on it to get flat enough that I'm touching the plywood underneath the air chamber.  Will proceed to patch and probably replace the o-rings while I'm at it. I didn't go GRSleepNumberBed and instead ordered a patch kit and new o-rings from a vendor on line.  Less than $15 shipped, should be here in a few days.  I'll sleep on the other side of the bed for a few days...
