Apparently there was an attempted bombing at the Portland Oregon tree lighting ceremony last night. Were any GRMers there? I know we have several from the area and I use to live down there and would sometimes go to the lighting myself.

The bomber was a 19 year old Somali kid that was a legal US citizen. Thankfully he wasn't very bright and obtained the bomb (a fake) from some undercover FBI agents. One of the supposed stated reasons was basically because Oregon is one of those places that "nobody ever thinks about".

Portland is an awesome city. I've never seen such a green minded city with such a cool car culture. Glad this guy is off the streets.

I don't recall any headlines when he purchased the bomb from the agents. Shouldn't that have been the crime, instead of calling the cell number that supposedly would detonoate it?

Any crime they could get him on for purchasing the bomb would only put him away from a very small amount of time. You'd have to prove that he meant to use it for terror.

Now you really don't have to prove it. He's going away for a long time...

David S. Kris, assistant U.S. attorney general for national security, said, "The complaint alleges that Mohamud attempted to detonate what he believes to be a vehicle bomb at a crowded holiday event in downtown Portland, but a coordinated undercover law enforcement action was able to thwart his efforts and ensure no one was harmed. "

...

For some reason the voices in my head keep adding "We need to stop these large, lawful assemblies to combat the terror problem at home".

Then the Terrorists win.

It was good the cops let the kid play out his plan, also good that someone knew about it before the big bang.

For the record... The voices in my head were adding that statement to the quote from the govt. official.

In my opinion the "terrorists" scored a major victory when they managed to pass the Patriot act.

Just goes to show what we are up against. The guy was a Somali who became an American citizen.

You'd think that he'd be happy to be away from Somalia, which is rated the most lawless and dangerous place on the planet to live, yet he chose to try to attack the country which welcomed him. Maybe it's just me... but anyway, hats off to the FBI for catching this clown.

This guy practically caught himself. I'd like to believe the general populace of dolts who think they can usher change by murdering a bunch of innocent people are all this stupid. I think he was likely just a lunatic kid who was feeling like school shootings had jumped the shark rather than a serious anything. He appears to have been hatching the plan alone (excepting for the FBI) since he was 15.

Perhaps this kid was an idiot who ultimately caught himself but that doesn't mean they all are dummies. Timothy McVeigh did something very similar (planned it mostly by himself etc) but was unfortunately successful. I wish the Fibbies had caught him beforehand.

Yeah aside from knowing people that would have been caught in this just knowing there are ones out there smart enough to not get caught that may pick up his target is creepy.

The kid seemed to idolize Osama, in one article it said he made a video and was dressed the same way we normally see Bin Laden. You know the head cover, white robes with a miltary jacket over the top. The article also said he seemed to blame his parents for holding him back.

Well more news related to the attempted bombing in Portland. The Mosque where the bomber frequented has been burned down this morning and investigators are saying that it is arson.

LOL!

So... if a moron stupidly attacks a group of innocent people in retaliation for some douchnozzle attacking a group of people - is it additive or do they cancel each other out?

Are they both acts of terror or is one a hate crime? I wish we had a member of the Thought Police handy to answer these burning questions.

Actually someone else suggested it could have been an "inside" job to destroy records and the like considering the only parts that were damaged were the office areas and the like yet the worship areas were not damaged.

The really unfortunate thing is that there are people out there every minute of every day who in their desperate need for attention or whatever are planning the next great event. At every school, there is a kid planning to do the next Columbine; at every monument to the US, someone wanting to strike another threat against the US, etc, etc, etc. It's hard to explain and even harder to plan against and prevent. We have the choice of being a "free" country or allowing the whack jobs to control our lives. Now excuse me while I get ready to go to a Christmas concert tonite. That's my choice.

Any hate group is going to go for the largest most public part of the Mosque which would be the worship area, i doubt they would waste any time on the dinky office part in the back so this seems plausible.

this guy was probably not a real danger- had the FBI never caught onto him and helped him get the plan further along, he would probably have never done anything worse than complain about the infidel West..

that being said, i'm glad they got this guy. it serves as a warning to others out there that harbor similar ideas and beliefs that the Americans are watching out for them and that maybe they shouldn't trust whoever it is that they are buying the bomb making materials from. it keeps the bad guys on guard, and that's a good thing.

i've seen other posts on websites where some people think that this is a case of entrapment and that the whole case should be thrown out on that basis. these are some of the same people that think that too many criminals get off on stupid technicalities and that our justice system is severely flawed.. judging by the past posts i've seen from these people, it mostly boils down to them not liking the people that are currently in charge- this exact same bust 2 years ago would have been hailed as a complete and total success and as a large victory against the people that wish to do us harm.

people are funny sometimes, i guess..

In reply to novaderrik:

I would actually think that this guy is a real threat and the type that the general public should be more worried about in some respects. If someone is determined they can find the information and supplies to build improvised munitions. Heck just go to any number of the surplus stores in the area (remember this is where I grew up) and you can find the military manuals for improvised munitions for a few bucks. Loads of places you could find books like The Anarchists Cookbook or the Poor Man's James Bond series of books that all have plenty of info in them. Heck a simple search online and you can find all sorts of information.

I seriously doubt that this kid would have dulled down to just saying how bad that States are evil and all that. If he was as determined as it seems considering he actually went through with the activities when given the chance and did not back out he would have found a way. It may not have been a bomb, maybe we would have had another sniper on our hands, or maybe he would have walked into that crowd with a machine gun and opened fire. Remember where there is a will, no matter how disturbed it might be, there is a way.

Personally the WMD charge does not seem to fit, though treason certainly would fit, but then people might get upset about him being hanged instead being imprisoned for life on the tax payers dime.

I'm glad that kids seem either too dumb or lazy to figure this out. When I was a kid we had no problem getting things to blow up with stuff we found around the house. Now kids just seem to go buy a box of used pin ball machine parts in a mall parking lot and hope for the best.
