SWMBO takes lots of pictures and has filled up her Dropbox account.

She has a DSLR and is really getting into the photography thing. Lots of pictures, lots of processing in Lightroom.

We need a way to back up these files. Raw files, processed files. To make this more complicated, the solution also needs to be easily accessed by phone.

We're open to a "Dropbox"-like service, she likes Dropbox now, but for a long term solution, that involves re-signing up with a new email address once a year, which seems a little silly for a long term solution.

Also open to a wireless network drive IF it can be as easily and seamlessly integrated as a cloud-based solution.

So... hit me with what you guys are using.

Easiest... probably http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/01/western-digital-my-cloud-review-the-150-personal-cloud/

Best... I don't know.

I REALLY want to figure out how to use the 2x the above (or 2x raspberry pis) and have one of them off-site. I want my E36 M3 backed up when my house burns down/the local drive explodes/etc.

Expect to pay for data if you have more than a few gigabytes.

Google Drive, iCloud, Flickr and others. All of them are available via phone.

There's also Eye-Fi which is an SD Card that has a built-in wifi connection that you can use to automatically send the pictures to your phone or it can backup to a cloud solution via a wireless connection.

I will caution you to not rely on the cloud as the single source of a backup. I would pair it with a NAS solution you connect to your home network.

Oh, if you have a device you can dedicate to it, http://owncloud.org/

Still has the issue I mentioned above. If your house burns down, you are berkeleyed. They need an easy button for duplicating storage off-site.

How does she like the lenses you got her?

Only got the 50mm so far. Issues with the MX6 have rather halted frivolous spending for the time being.

She loves the 50mm though, especially once she figured out how to use it. It's a bit artsy-fartsy for a lot of indoor work, though, but she's having a fun time with the focus depth and such.

35mm will come soon. Wrapping up a couple parts deals that should fund it.

How would i easily set that up to auto-sync with a destination folder on the PC, and then access it via phone in an intuitive and easy-to-use way?

Why would you want to wirelessly access everything? Once the event has been processed keep some favorites on whatever you are using now and move the rest to off cloud storage. That's what my wife does with the thousands of photos she takes.

For the off cloud storage solution DVD or CD is more stable than hard drive. Hard drives can randomly lose data, ask me how I know...

I have 50gb Dropbox without yearly signup... FOR FREE. I don't know if you can still do it but when I signed up, if you linked a few devices and sent some e-mails to friends (like another one of my email addresses) you moved up the free scale. I went from 2gb to 50 in a couple of weeks by doing a little digging.

She needs to access the processed pictures with her phone. Not sure how to do that non-wirelessly besides dealing with a mess of USB cable.

Yep, that's what she has. 53.75gb to be exact. It's full.

Oooo. Answer to my above desire for off-site backup.

http://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/Latest/Backup/Backing_Up_To_A_Friends_Computer

So, WD Cloud for local/web accessible backup. Crashplan for your E36 M3 burns down backup to someone else with a WD Mycloud/NAS/Whatever.

I need to get on this.

Yep, Pentax forums mentioned Crashplan. Seems pretty cool. Looks like that might be the combo to get.

Why not something like Photobucket or Smugmug. That's where I dump 90% of my pictures. I have 20 gig of storage on Photobucket for about $2 a month. It doesn't crash and is accessible from all of my computers and phone.

I think we're needing something like.... 1TB. Took her less than a year to max out her 53 gig DropBox, and with summer coming and new lenses, i'd expect volume to increase substantially.

And i think she wants something that will auto-sync like Dropbox somehow. She's just exporting from Lightroom into the Dropbox folder on the PC, which then auto-syncs to the cloud.

At least, that's what i get out of it. I'm old school and if i were to do this sort of thing for myself, i'd just run a backup NAS to mirror what i put in the folder, or just save all the files there to begin with, and any finished files would go there as well.

Whichever ones i thought i'd want to share somewhere would get manually uploaded to Flickr.

I'd be inclined to dump to a 2T drive and sort to a Dropbox. Offsite storage in the T range looks to be pretty expensive. Photobucket is $400 a year for 500G.

Wasn't someone on here posting about Chinese storage that was cheap a couple of months ago? Might have been Fueled/Iggy.

Who is your internet provider? For that level of data storage it might be easiest to just host your own website.

Look into backblaze. Backblaze

It is an online backup service for Windows and Mac. It includes a mobile app to access your data. $5/month. Unlimited space. We use it because SWMBO is a shutterbug. She had multiple dvds and a 1.5 tb external drive for backing up her photos. You can prepay a year for $50. I don't know how well the mobile app work, but it is pretty braindead simple .

is she shooting raw? it's easy to fill up a lot of space quickly if she is... not that I would ever discourage someone shooting raw.

I would keep drop box around but use it only for resized jpgs only because of how convenient it is when on another computer or mobile device... 1600x1067 or so is more than enough for generic viewing on computer or mobile device and turns a 25mb raw file into a sub 500kb file... with 50gb on dropbox that's over 100,000 pics

if I where in your situation... I would likely go with carbonite.com for a cloud system backup... my old church used it and it worked well when the old computer died and I had to restore the new one... although it did take a while thanks to the slow DSL internet... as I recall it would auto backup every night...

on premise add an external HDD setup for auto backup and then just to be good and safe burn to good quality DVD's and store them off sight... reburn the DVD's every few years

Open & controllable, low setup effort, cheap. Pick two, then I'll recommend something.

I don't get it. Is everyone aside from SFO overlooking my suggestions entirely?

  • The WD Cloud IS a 2TB drive that provides online access to all your E36 M3. Basically a home-hosted drop-box. You are only limited by the amount of storage you feel like buying.
  • You can accomplish the same thing with a Pi + spare drive + owncloud also.
  • I believe there are also several home level NAS drives that support OwnCloud as well. I know there is a client for Synology.

Or to put it in layman's terms...
