The picture that Tom posted and the pic of Gilligan are both bucket hats and have shorter brims. The other picture is a true boonie hat. They typically come with 3" brims.

It's a hat. It was designed, sewn, and packaged. It was *meant* to be worn. It's not some antique toy that's gonna lose it's value because the original packaging is gone.
We've 2 'Army-Navy' stores in Billings (MT), and they both have various countries' iterations of said hat. They run about $15, but they're worth every penny if you got sunburned at least once every summer from the age of 5, thru 17. That's way too many to even chance being out in the sun much W/O a wide brimmed hat. Definitely buy at least one, and if you're a klutz that loses them on boats, a couple may be in order.

Second. Non-bucket, real brim, and a chinstrap. Wind is a ... (what's the filter word for B***H?).
Just put in an order for a Desert Storm boonie. I was tempted to pick up a mid-80s poplin boonie, but held off. The hardest part was measuring my head. Every time I did, it changed. I don't mean it varied a little; I was getting readings all over the place. Like some frog inflating and deflating its head.
Got some cool 'Nam era army manuals, new and unused for cheap, too. I could have gotten a used periscope off of a tank for six bucks, but my girlfriend said nyet
