I never understood why the F4 didn't have a gun until later. What kind of fighter plane doesn't have a gun?!

Because it was designed to be a (then) modern long ranger fighter/interceptor/bomber and the thought was guns were so WWII. The MiGs had different ideas though...
Anyone else remember when the Blue Angels used Phantoms? That's a lot of plane to be honking around like that.
