I just wrote a proposal to the university of Illinois suggesting a digital archive method based on some of the cryptology methods. Only this time it would be to make data readily available rather than to hide it. It would be for a PhD program. No hot link so every one has to drink.

If the words "NSF Scholarship For Service" or "Federal Cyber Security" are ever offered to you in your pursuit of higher security education (pun fully intended), run, hell SPRINT away. Woe is me that there was no one to offer me that advice.

That said:

I've been out of the business for several years and out of graduate school for longer, so I don't know who's at UI right now. I'd avoid JHU's ISI. One of the professors at UNC Chapel Hill owes me a beer, but would probably sweat me through some old problems before I could claim it. I don't have too much of a finger on the pulse of the academic security community anymore, but be very certain about who you want to study under. I've seen plenty of PhD candidates crushed under the ego of their supposed advisors. It's not pretty.

This is all on the computer science side of the equation. If you're more mathy, you're on your own. Even though I loved that stuff and have a better grasp of it than most, some form of mathematical dyslexia prevented me from ever being able to prove I understood it :)

And last but not least...

I'll give you a possible explanation.
Of course, I should have made the connection. Now, explain the one that MG Bryan pulled up - reposting for awesomeness.

the first google images hit for that image is this blog
http://todaylackscontext.tumblr.com/

the post in that blog which contains that picture is preceded by a post that quotes and references cryptonomicon

That would be Michonne. A true bad ass in the comics. If I remember right the "escorts" are her boy friend and his best friend.

^^that's what I read last night after seeing that picture. Apparently she cut off their arms and lower jaws so they could not attack her, then chained them to herself. She drags them around as a warning to the other walkers to berkeley off

You know, you'd think they'd at least pull the tow strap off of that before taking pictures.
